NYC police union launches campaign to keep mayor away from funerals

Source: Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York's police union is showing its displeasure with Mayor Bill de Blasio and the head of the city council by starting a campaign to keep the two politicians away from funerals of fallen officers.

The campaign follows harsh criticism of de Blasio by Patrick Lynch, the head of the union, who said the mayor had failed to support the police after a grand jury decided against indicting a white officer in the chokehold death of Eric Garner.

<snip>

New York City Patrolmen's Benevolent Association posted a form on its website, for members to sign, that requests that de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito keep away from funeral services should an officer die in the line of duty.

The mayor and other senior city officials traditionally attend the funerals of fallen officers.

The form, entitled "Don't Insult My Sacrifice", accused the pair of "consistent refusal to show police officers the support and respect they deserve."

To them, no cop is ever guilty of anything, no matter how solid the evidence against them. They defend Pantload even after seeing the video.

If he wants to, the Mayor will attend funerals of fallen policeman. The union can go pound sand.

attempting to rob de Blasio from photo opportunities in order to coerce him into backing killer cops, right or wrong.

Don't think I'm supporting de Blasio, I'm merely pointing out that the police union is playing politics.

They should focus their attention on teaching their members how to avoid trouble by not profiling and not targeting minority people irresponsibly and illegally.

Not that this isn't done in smaller rural localities as noted in the news...

That avatar means much the same as anyone's. It's an indicator of my general attitude towards politics.

Babies who very often don't give a shit about the city. It's there for them to milk from the suburbs until pension time. At which point they can cash NYC checks wherever they like and talk about what a cesspool it is.

My husband always seems to answer the phone when they call and is intimidated into saying yes. Then if the check is not forthcoming fast enough (because I'm the one with the check book) call back and call back and send reminders and more reminders through the mail.

I told my husband to tell them the next time that he is on the do not call list and his wife will not donate to anyone who violates that list.

its not for him or the union to decide. They work for the city not the union.
