Texas weighs allowing open carry of handguns

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Long depicted as the rootin'-tootin' capital of American gun culture, Texas is one of the few states with an outright ban on the open carry of handguns.

That could change in 2015, with the Republican-dominated Legislature and Gov.-elect Greg Abbott expected to push for expanded gun rights.

"If open carry is good enough for Massachusetts, it's good enough for the state of Texas," Abbott said the day after his election last month.

And if Texas, which allows concealed handguns, embraces open carry — rolling back a 140-year ban — it would be the largest state to have done so.

to the open carry protesters having to carry rifles as that is now the only way they can. Do not care for open carry myself but was never bothered by it either.

Does it mean CHL's want their guns stolen and will be unhappy that open carry will have more guns stolen? That is preposterous.

I have a CHL and don't much care one way or the other. I does seem to me that there may be something to the old saying, "he wore his gun outside hs pants for honest men to see."

At least a handgun is actually useful for day to day personal self defense.

Sure long guns are much better at distance and easier to be accurate with, but it's really burdensome to carry around.

Open carry is the mantra of the Republican Party nowadays. If they Really care about the Second Amendment they should be pushing for women and minorities to open carry, but they mean only White Men should open carry, since we've seen what happens to young black men carrying toys, Pepsi and Skittles. Do cops Really want open carry? How about when they are surrounded by young black men, all legally carrying guns??
