San Jose officer draws social media backlash for posts against protests
Source: San Jose Mercury News
SAN JOSE -- A San Jose police officer drew sharp criticism throughout social media Sunday because of provocative, threatening posts on his Twitter account that were directed toward protesters who have been demonstrating after the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of law enforcement.
One post on Officer Phillip White's account read: "Threaten me or my family and I will use my God given and law appointed right and duty to kill you. #CopsLivesMatter."
Another Tweet added: "By the way if anyone feels they can't breathe or their lives matter I'll be at the movies tonight, off duty, carrying my gun."
By mid-Sunday afternoon, White's Twitter account was in "protected" mode, meaning his posts no longer could be accessed by the public. But posts on his account were captured on screen grabs by others on social media and this newspaper, as well as the BuzzFeed website, which first reported the story.

(1,935 posts)There are the people who set the rules for cops to follow, for one.
There are bad systems in place, for another. In the Cleveland case, the dispatcher failed to relay relevant information to the cops.
Bad cops are a fraction of the problem.
Putting all the blame on cops shows ignorance.

if you are going to use deadly force, it better be clear to anybody and everybody that it was justified.
yes, that means you are between a rock and a hard place before you can act. Im all for defending oneself. But when, for example, Wilson has a few bruises, you cant convince me he _had_ to kill Brown.
and this guy's twitter is exactly the point. Big bad ass tough guy...as long as he has his gun.
"law appointed right and duty to kill". Wrong answer bub. Your law appointed duty is to serve and protect. That macho tough guy bullshit mentality. Until the day I die, I will always wonder where tough guy cops (and every other tough guy in this country) were during these wars. two wars. 25 years of war combined. But they couldnt be bothered. They think tough is threatening AMERICANS with their badge and gun. They think tough is shooting unarmed americans.
The cops are the ones who pulled the triggers. Their attitudes, prejudices and egos and their cop culture got them in this mess. If they dont like it, they should quit.

(40,656 posts)He also sounds racist.
You hit the nail on the head. In the peace time military, COs have been relieved because of troop violation of the Rules of Engagement. Our police MUST be held to a higher standard. They are trigger happy and to me it seems they are wetting their pants scared and seek immediate retribution. WRONG. Hasn't any of the officers heard of diffusing the situation.

(1,254 posts)the academy he attended didn't do a good enough job explaining his legal authority regarding use of force. That is the consensus of opinion among law enforcement and legal experts to explain why the misuse of force is growing. The bulk of training is focused on defense, how to use force and how to respond rapidly to dangerous situations. Not enough time is spent on what legal standards must be met to justify use of force, especially lethal force. There are instances where a police officer can break the law and not be prosecuted for it if it meets with the "defense of life" escape clause. This officer is going to end up in jail. He is seriously mistaking his authority. There is a general guideline called the "Use of Force Continuum that offers the appropriate levels of force and when they may apply. A police officer is not suppose to beat the crap out of a citizen who is unarmed, nonviolent and not a suspect of a felony/serious crime. The cop who arrested and tazed that 76 year old driver who was trying to explain he was driving a dealership vehicle is an excellent example of the misuse of force. The driver was not trying to resist arrest when he did not comply with the officer's verbal command. The 76 year old was trying to explain something to the officer and the officer had a duty to follow a chain of non aggressive solutions. As in many of the incidents we are reading about now, if the citizen doesn't act immediately to a verbal instruction, the officer immediately over reacts with excessive force. Then, when the police officers break police protocol and/or the law, police departments, commissions and public DA's are hesitant to prosecute. Citizens are forced to file civil suits for lack of achieving justice through the criminal system.

(4,524 posts)Better not come near me, because I'll whip out my gun and mow you all down like Chuck Norris!
This is exactly the type that should not have a gun. Someone who dares others to essentially 'come and get shot' by him. They're action movie heroes in their own minds, but only if their adversaries are unarmed and not a threat to them in any way.
It's impossible to know if the cop here is serious, but there are some stupid things nobody should put on the internet.

If you become an officer you swear to uphold the law - no matter what your feelings, views or beliefs - if you think otherwise you are in the wrong profession and should leave now.

If an officer feels he cannot fulfill those duties, then he should not continue to pretend to serve the public as a police officer. He cannot do his job. He is not fit for his job.
On the other hand, the protestors should not, and as I understand it, are not threatening the lives of police officers. Of course, officers should not be threatened or harmed by protestors. I am unaware that any of them are in danger.
The problem is racial profiling. As long as officers are not quicker to kill black suspects than white suspects, seems to me they have nothing to fear.

(401 posts)This guy Officer Phillip White is not my boss and not my better, despite whatever he thinks.
And he thinks he is threatened by people opposing police violence. Which is deranged.
As I understand it, he works for me. And I live too close to San Jose to worry about goofballs like this are running around in my area.
I say, the City Council needs to fire his ass, right now.

(10,274 posts)A San Jose police officer is now on leave after controversial tweets about protests in the Bay Area. Officer Phillip White's tweets were aimed at people protesting deadly police brutality, and his messages have created a firestorm of controversy.
The posts on White's account can no longer be accessed by the public. But they were already captured by others including the website Buzzfeed, which displayed other posts the officer had made previously about the ongoing demonstrations. Since his tweets were revealed, there's been a lot of criticism and repercussions. White was not only a police officer, he was also an assistant basketball coach at Menlo College. The school fired him on Monday, but that's the least of his troubles.
White's tweets read: "Threaten me or my family and I will use my God given and law appointed right and duty to kill you. #CopsLivesMatter."
And another reads: "By the way if anyone feels they can't breathe or their lives matter, I'll be at the movies tonight, off duty, carrying my gun."
The reaction was quick and predictable.
