Cleveland police union president: ...Justice for Tamir Rice shirt 'disrespectful'

Source: Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland police union president said on Sunday that Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins' "Justice for Tamir Rice" shirt is "pathetic."

Jeff Follmer said on Sunday that Hawkins' shirt was disrespectful and demanded an apology from the Browns.

Hawkins wore a shirt that said "Justice for Tamir Rice and John Crawford" on the front and "The Real Battle for Ohio" on the back during pre-game warm-ups before the Browns home game against the Cincinnati Bengals at FirstEnergy Stadium.

"He's an athlete. He's someone with no facts of the case whatsoever," Follmer said. "He's disrespecting the police on a job that we had to do and make a split-second decision."

When politicians and law enforcement object to "justice" Government has a serious problem it appears America is NOT a nation of laws and is not concerned about justice. It seems every day we are put on notice. Disrespect is a logical consequence.

This honcho cop guy Jeff Follmer needs to be replaced or fired or gotten rid of. He and his cohorts are an embarrassment to the union movement, which nowadays means cover up of police brutality. Which is not the point of unions.

And this is in Cleveland? Didn't the Justice Department have something wholly scathing to say recently about Cleveland's long time history of police brutality?

The cops need to change, not the people criticizing them or protesting cop violence....

Do these assholes really think they are deserving of any respect at all?

Here is a tip for officers. You can't demand respect and you don't earn it through fear and intimidation.

Your jobs are to serve and protect, not to demand respect.

Dec 2014

The implications of Follmer's statements are that videos of the shooting, and police statements amount to "no facts of the case whatsoever", and that citizens are disrespectful if they do anything other than trust that the police always do the right thing, and that all the "facts of the case whatsoever" is the business of the police and not the business of the public, whose role is to let the police "do their job".

And there lies the problem, they made the wrong decision because the placed themselves in the wrong position. They should have stood back and observed the situation instead of rushing in without assessing the situation first. They should at least be terminated for poor judgment then assessed for their performance. My not split-second assessment? At least manslaughter for the shooter and reckless endangerment for the driver.

The people you are defending killed an innocent child because they used poor judgment, please let us know the reasoning you are using for defending them.

Instead of barreling in 20 feet from the kid and rolling out of the car with guns pulled, panicking the kid and pretty much guaranteeing that he would not immediately comply with ANY order, because he's fucking PANICKED, how about pulling up 100 yards, or even just 50 yards away and using the PA system to order the kid to drop the "gun."

Fuck wits.

Same with Crawford. I saw the video, they gave him NO time to comply.

In neither case was anyone else in even the appearance of immediate danger.

These deaths fall squarely on the shoulders of the cops. I'm fucking SICK of it.

it amazes me that these are the people who claim someone else's "free speech" somehow "disrespects" them and hurts these law enforcement folks' feelings.

If you're in a profession where you cannot temper your emotions, cannot take the "heat" of the job, you're in the wrong profession. It would be like a school teacher who hates kids, a nurse who can't stand the sight of blood, or a baker who hates to cook.

The very fact that the police union is attempting to silence a protester speaks volumes about how highly they value constitutionally protected rights. Complaining about outrage at the murder of a child also speaks loudly of the institutional lack of value placed on human life.
