Belgium cut off from world by national strike

Source: AFP

BRUSSELS: Belgium ground to a halt in its biggest strike in years on Monday as trade unions grounded flights, cut international rail links and shut sea ports to protest the new government's austerity plans.

In the climax to a month of industrial action against new Prime Minister Charles Michel's policies, striking workers stopped all public transport while most schools, businesses and government offices shut down.

Pickets also blocked traffic outside the Brussels headquarters of the European Union, a 28-nation bloc that has seen years of protests against austerity aimed at cutting debts that threatened the euro currency.

The Belgian strike came days after a day of protest in Italy against Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's ambitious reform plans, while there have been similar demonstrations in Spain and Greece in recent months.

They never make things hot for the government ministers with their automatic €10,000 a month tax free pensions, but working people get their lives messed up and then are expected to show solidarity, as if this action were somehow conducted in a manner that would make their lives easier.

When the people can wield this much power against the corporate elite/plutocrats...is wonderful. I have severe Union envy now. Go, go Union POWAH!

only negotiate cost of living raises. They are demoralized. Don't know if all of private unions would strike. Walker and his pals will give to many exemptions.

The people have the power.

There is strength in numbers.

There is strength and power in unions.

On the 6th of Nov, we had the biggest demonstration in 30 years, with 120.000 in Brussels.

The times they are changing.
