WASHINGTON President Obama, accompanied by Gov. Chris Christie, will head to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst today to mark the end of combat operations in Afghanistan and thank the troops stationed there for their service to their country.
The president was scheduled to fly via Air Force One to the base, the only U.S. facility serving three branches of the military, and deliver remarks before returning to Washington.
Christie, a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate, was to meet Obama at the landing field. The two men bonded over the federal response to Hurricane Sandy, touring hard-hit New Jersey towns shortly before the 2012 election in which Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Christie was criticized by some Republicans for embracing the Democratic president so close to the election.
U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez (both D-N.J.), are also scheduled to attend the event.

(67,782 posts)Actually Obama is flying to the air base on Air Force One, where the event is to be held.
Christie will be travelling separately within NJ to the event and will be attending the event.
The headline implies that they will be traveling together, and doesn't mention (although the article does) that Senators Booker and Menendez are also attending the event.

(25,247 posts)I'm surprised that he is even going to this event if he is considering a run for the Repub nomination in 2016.

Senator Menendez (pretty quiet)
Senator Booker (some cheers, and "boos" but I'm sure that was for "Booooooker"!)
A couple of Congressmen that I didn't recognize (little reaction)

(67,782 posts)...he would have snubbed Obama. Not showing up today could have been used against him, regardless of the fact that Obama was there, too.
