Hanukkah begins at sundown Tuesday

Source: The Desert Sun

At sundown Tuesday, Jewish families worldwide will light the first candle on the menorah, marking the start of Hanukkah, an eight-day observance celebrating the re-dedication of the temple in Jerusalem and the right to practice their faith.

“It is not the Jewish Christmas,” said Leslie Pepper, director of education at Temple Sinai in Palm Desert, though many other faiths refer to it as such.

“It’s about Jewish survival in a non-Jewish world.”

Also known as the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah marks the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem following the three-year Battle of the Maccabees in 167 BCE that led to the Jews reclaiming the land now known as Jerusalem from the Greek Syrians.

It would be offensive if I said "Happy Hanukkah" to everyone at DU, assuming that everyone here observed it. I didn't do that. I said "Happy Hannukah" specifically to those who do celebrate it because it's starting tomorrow.

When your holiday comes around, let me know & I'll wish you a happy whatever it is.

I just got home earlier tonight and have a couple of holiday greetings I need to send. And those pix couldn't be any cuter! I love seeing adorable Voodoo, his outfit is priceless, LOL, and how did Tony turn out so well?? He successfully lights candles and I can't seem to keep my kitten out of the kitchen sink...

My friend's sweet little Maltese was given a shirt that says Hanukkah Princess, looks very nice, though the mutual friend who gave it to him seems to have forgotten that he was a boy dog...

If you look closely, it is a bad photoshop with Tony. LOL! I have to go find Chanukah candles tomorrow. I have a few for the first few days. I may have to go to Tulsa.

Since Tony has passed, I think I will use my cat Menorah this year. The girls will love to see "bad kitty" again.

But, now that I have a cat of my own, I really should have known better, LOL. Mine, especially with that tail, would undoubtedly turn himself into a feline torch!

And, since the pets are obviously involved, wishing you a safe Hanukkah, too!

Great job with the disruptor, never got a verdict from my alert, hoped to shut him out of the thread, but this turned out way better...

I photoshopped (poorly) a flame to the wick.

Felix is a handsome man! I miss my kitty so much. It is good you took him in, black cats have an even shorter life than most feral cats. Sad, but true.

And I found my little guy when I just happened to stop for groceries one night. He was living in the parking lot at a store where they were doing construction and the workers told me he'd ben there for a few days. There was just no way I could leave him there and the vet said he was only about seven weeks and weighed 2.6 lbs.

As for black cats, three of the (now) four cats I have had in my life have been black. The last one I rescued from outdoors back in 2002 at age 12. And the first one was just the best cat in the world, offered to adopt her and her "sister" cat when my uncle died. I named her Rhiannon -

I was going to post an early pic of this little guy, but I remembered that I shared this with MIRT. I can't read my OP now, but you can... It includes pix.
