Amber Alert: Child abducted from Berne (NY) home (UPDATE found dead)

UPDATE: Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says authorities have a “person of interest” in the death of Kenneth White, the 5-year-old boy who was initially reported as kidnapped from his Berne home and later found dead near the trailer where he lived.

Someone was being questioned Friday morning, said the sheriff, who discounted the story authorities were initially told that the boy was abducted Thursday by two men wearing ski masks.

Speaking on WGY-810AM, Apple said “It’s a horrific act and we hope to have more details in the next few hours.”

Apple did not describe the person authorities were interviewing. The boy had been living with an aunt, who the sheriff said was his legal guardian. The boy’s mother lived in Amsterdam and his father lived in western Massachusetts.

Police looking for pickup truck, two suspects in ski masks

BERNE — Police agencies were on high alert Thursday afternoon after a 5-year-old was abducted from a town home.

Two men wearing ski masks allegedly went into the home about 1:20 p.m. on Thacher Park Road and took the child, Kenneth White. He is described in an Amber Alert as 3-foot-5, weighing about 45 pounds and with short brown hair.

Kenneth was last seen wearing jeans and a checkered white short-sleeved shirt.

One of the suspects is a white man, about 5-foot-10, who was last seen wearing black clothes, including a ski mask, black boots and black gloves. The second suspect, also believed to be a man, is of unknown race and wore similar clothing.
