Irish face new abortion row over brain-dead woman

DUBLIN (AP) Ireland is debating its ban on abortion again as doctors keep a brain-dead pregnant woman on life support, awaiting a judge's verdict on what do to with the living fetus.
Irish media reported Thursday that relatives want to turn off the woman's life support systems but doctors are refusing because the law requires them to defend the right to life of her 16-week-old fetus. Fetuses typically cannot survive outside the womb until around 24 weeks.
An expert on Irish medical law, Dr. Adam McAuley, said Dublin High Court most likely would determine whether the woman will be kept alive artificially until the baby can be delivered. The case is scheduled for Tuesday.
"The law isn't clear, and when there is conflict, the matter will have to come before the court," said McAuley, a Dublin City University law lecturer.

(149,640 posts)Let that poor woman die along with her 16 week old fetus. Even at 24 weeks, they typically don't do well.
I wonder what caused her brain death, and how often that sort of thing happens? That's the condition that they need to work on: prevention of brain death in pregnant women, so that these horrible situations don't happen in the first place.

Let the family decide. Poor people. What a horror to have to endure

(50,560 posts)Ireland is in a strange situation: so long as abortion is as easy to obtain in Europe as it is, and transit to a country that allows it is as cheap as it is, Ireland's government can both please the Catholics who believe abortion is the worst sin in the world AND accommodate most of the women who need abortions. Only in cases where the woman needs an abortion but can't travel does this shit prove to be the joke that it is.

(946 posts)but I think this case is different. Basically, she's already dead. At least she'll be able to have one last shot at completing the goal she's been preparing for.

(93 posts)the living family has a choice and chose not to continue. We have the same thing happen here and I am sick of it.
If her loved ones wanted to keep her on life support, I would fully support it but the family wants to put the poor woman to rest with dignity.

I see it now. Must have glossed right over it.

(113,348 posts)Last year after bitter debate, lawmakers amended Ireland's abortion ban to make terminations legal if doctors deem the woman's life at risk from continued pregnancy. That step had been delayed for two decades. It finally happened after an Indian woman died from blood poisoning linked to her own dying fetus; the Irish hospital had refused her abortion pleas, citing the fetus' heartbeat.
or the case of the woman in texas?
I am truly disappointed to see this kind of support on this board. not surprised, just disappointed.

mentioned what happened to this particular woman.
I did just see where the family wanted her taken off life support. If it makes you feel any better, I do think they should go with the family's wishes.
