ISIS’s Harrowing Sexual Violence Toward Yezidi Women Revealed

Source: Time

Tessa Berenson

Militants with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have enslaved and sexually brutalized scores of women, selling them into marriage or giving them as gifts to militant fighters, according to a new report.

Since August, ISIS has captured hundreds, if not thousands of Yezidi women and girls and taken them into sexual slavery as part of an ethnic cleansing movement, the Amnesty International report says. The Yezidis are a Kurdish ethno-religious minority group that have been historically oppressed by Sunni extremists.

Once captive, many of the women are forced to convert to Islam and subjected to rape and other forms of sexual abuse. “Many of those held as sexual slaves are children — girls aged 14, 15 or even younger,” said Donatella Rovera, Amnesty’s senior crisis-response adviser. “[ISIS] fighters are using rape as a weapon in attacks amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

The report also details how many of the captive women have been driven to suicide by their abuse.

I would suspect Mr. Akin long before giving the merest thought to Bill Cosby vis-a-vis rape.

Shame on you for even making the comparison. It is American-centric in the extreme and does a disservice to the suffering of these people to randomly inject your politics into this tragedy.

This is the way it has been done for 1500 years.

Brutality, misogyny, sexual abuse and forced conversions were the norm between 900 ACE and 1500 ACE.

Money from Saudi Arabia and Qatar has brought this to the surface.

"man can only have sex with their wives and that which the right hand possesses".

right hand possesses was interpreted to mean slaves and captives. but the real reason for that law, the secret of authoritarian power, is explained here:

which is why the demented republicons (and any organized religion serving royalty) oppose any kind sex ed.

that's what they are - a masturbation cult

That is why we are shocked by all this - on the deepest level we do not get these people.

The main difference is extreme in group preference. It may be partially genetic - cousin marriage is the norm thus each tribe is highly inbred- but in group preference is certainly part of the culture. In the end the cause of the preference is irrelevent. It just is.

They do not see different people as having dignity or lives that matter. This "we are all in this together" stuff does not work over there.

ISIS either needs to be mercilessly crushed or dealt with as a nation. There is no Paris peace conferences and the ilk.

We don't get them and we are doomed for failure. Either deal with them on their terms using their tactics or we lose.

The source for this story is Amnesty International, which also endorsed and "validated" the false claim about Iraqi soldiers throwing babies out of incubators in Kuwait, which helped to get the US involved in the Gulf War.

Here, for example: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1992-01-07/news/1992007123_1_nayirah-kuwait-incubators

When mass rape was reported in the Congo in 2013, did you get excited about it? Oh, I'm sure you did.
