Union baggage handlers protest Southwest Airlines

Source: WNCN-AP

MORRISVILLE, N.C. -

A baggage handlers' union picketed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport Tuesday morning to protest how Southwest Airlines treats its employees and customers.

Members of the Transport Workers Union Local 555 passed out leaflets and held up picket signs at the passenger drop off area near Terminal 1 starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Union members say Southwest Airlines used to be known as a good place to work with on-time planes. They say management no longer see those things as important.

"We're career employees,” Kevin Willis, an employee with Southwest, told WNCN. “We're not temporary and we want the people to know that we're here for them. We love the Southwest customers and we want them to get the best treatment they possibly can get.”

More likely, that was management's idea of cost-cutting. Ken Burch Dec 2014 #2

to LA on Southwest last night from New Orleans. Southwest has two baggage carousels at LAX and only one was being used. Southwest had four flights all waiting for bags at the one baggage carousel. Lucky our bags came out first. Maybe this was some kind of protest.

They think the savings they get from only using one carousel are worth making luggage retrieval more laborious and difficult for their passengers.
