Forecasters say Saturday storms 'life threatening'

Source: AP-Excite

By SEAN MURPHY

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - In an unusually early and strong warning, national weather forecasters cautioned Friday that conditions are ripe for violent tornadoes to rip through the nation from Texas to Minnesota this weekend.

As states across the middle of the country prepared for the worst, storms were already kicking off in Norman, Okla., where a twister whizzed by the nation's tornado forecasting headquarters but caused little damage.

It was only the second time in U.S. history that the Storm Prediction Center issued a high-risk warning more than 24 hours in advance, said Russ Schneider, director of the center, which is part of the National Weather Service. The first time was in April 2006, when nearly 100 tornadoes tore across the southeastern U.S., killing a dozen people and damaging more than 1,000 homes in Tennessee.

This weekend's outbreak could be a "high-end, life threatening event," the center said.

This graphic provided Friday, April 13, 2012, by NOAA's Storm Prediction Center shows a high risk of severe weather in portions of Kansas and Oklahoma on Saturday, April 14. According to forecasters, there is a 60 percent chance of tornadoes, high wind and hail within 25 miles of a point in an area from Salina, Kan., to Oklahoma City. Also, in the area marked with dashed lines, there is a 10 percent or greater chance that storms within 25 miles of a point could be significant. That region stretches from near Omaha, Neb., to west of Dallas. (AP Photo/NOAA)

6. I have friends in Lawrence and family in Salina, KS. Why is there no turquoise in the legend?

It goes brown 5%, yellow 15%, red 30%, pink 45% (and there is no pink on the map), and purple 60%. But the 60% area is turquoise. WTF?

The normal tornado map has turquoise and green as well, but the other severe weather maps do not.

7. There were two Tornadoes

but the news people swarmed the affluent side of town leaving the news copters to remotely cover the east side damage.
The old Mistletoe Express building was partly destroyed and the Crucible across the street had some damage which they reported.
Roofing companies were on hand to pass out business cards and Gawkers clogged the streets
in the Jefferson and Longfellow school area making emergency response by the OG&E and ONG slow to respond to dangerous downed power lines and gas leaks on the narrow residential streets.

Sunday morning is fore-casted to be a severe tornado risk with conditions similar to patterns which produced F3E+ mezo-cyclones only last spring, lets hope it does not materialize.
I fear for the safety of the good people in the Ohio River Valley as the storm warning system is not as advanced as it is in Oklahoma and because of the potential severity of the storms.
