Search and Rescue Operation Resume for Missing AirAsia Jet

Source: ABC News

By DEAN SCHABNER, BILL McGUIRE and BEN CANDEA

A massive search and rescue operation has resumed for an AirAsia Indonesia jet that lost contact with air traffic control over the Java Sea during a flight to Singapore shortly after the pilots requested a change of flight plan because of weather.

One of the ships that is part of the search and rescue effort reached the search location around Belitung Island at approximately 6:49 a.m., a spokeswoman for the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency said.

"Current weather conditions are not desirable," spokeswoman Annisa Noviantri said, explaing why the ship arrived nearly an hour after it was initially planned.

Darkness and bad weather had forced the suspension of the search about 5:30 p.m. local time Sunday evening, said Indonesian transport officials.

begins to smell like a conspiracy, and a coverup. Or sheer incompetence.

To lose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.

of the fact that the world has seemed to have forgotten the Malaysian Airlines 777 that went down, er, disappeared, and no debris has ever surfaced.

Yes, it's a different aircraft and different airline, but they flew in the same airspace that is becoming the Eastern Hemisphere's equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle.

The missing AirAsia passenger plane "is likely at the bottom of the sea", the chief of Indonesia's search effort has told a news conference.

The AirAsia plane that went missing with 162 people on board en route to Singapore is likely at the bottom of the sea, Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency chief says.

"Based on the coordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea," Bambang Soelistyo told a press conference.

"That's the preliminary suspicion and it can develop based on the evaluation of the result of our search."

Mr Soelistyo said Indonesia did not have "the tools", such as submersible vehicles, required to retrieve the plane from the seabed, but that it would reach out to other countries for help if necessary.

"Due to the lack of technology that we have, I have coordinated with our foreign minister so we will borrow from other countries which have offered. They are the UK, France and US," he said.

Indonesia has accepted Australia's offer of a RAAF plane to join the search.

A P-3 Orion left Darwin this morning and is heading to the search area.

My thoughts go out to all those with loved ones on the plane.

This has been a bad year for airlines out of that area. Both countries have lost many people between the 2 accidents and the one plane that was shot down.
