Revival Of US Embassy In Tehran Is Possible, Obama Says

WASHINGTON – More than 35 years since the American embassy in Tehran was besieged, US President Barack Obama has signaled that a renewed US presence in Iran is possible – should Iran choose to permanently curb its nuclear ambitions.

“I never say never, but I think these things have to go in steps,” Obama said of the possibility, in an interview with National Public Radio. The president was responding to a question on Iran following his decision to open an embassy in Havana, Cuba, after 50 years of frozen relations.

Cuba and Iran pose fundamentally different challenges, however, Obama explained.

“Tehran is a large, sophisticated country that has a track record of state-sponsored terrorism that we know was attempting to develop a nuclear weapon, or at least the component parts that would be required to develop a nuclear weapon; that has engaged in disruptions to our allies; whose rhetoric is not only explicitly anti-American, but also has been incendiary when it comes to its attitude towards the state of Israel,” he said.

because it fears they are trying to develop nukes (personally I think they should stop because nuclear power is "NOT" safe and there are huge issues with longterm storage of spent fuel) the whole republican mantra of "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran." would have gone up in smoke long ago.

The repuKKKe House and Senate are clamoring for war. They have zero interest in establishing diplomatic relations with Iran...the "axis of evil". Remember, W & darth wanted no part in existing on the same planet with Iran. kristol will shit his pants if this happens.

shaky at best. (BTW, Did he really say that Tehran is a country? Ouch)
Iran was deeply radicalized by the overthrow of its young democracy
by the US in 1953, AND EVEN MORE SO by the torture state installed by
the CIA and Isreal that terrorized the country for 25 full years. Very few Iranian
families did not suffer directly and greviously.
They have no nuclear weapons program, and their facilities (unlike Israel's!)
are inspected regularly.
Much of what passes for news is the basest of propaganda.
Lets try to keep the magical thinking under control on DU, OK?

Maybe by the time we reach the 50th anniversary there will be one. Actually funding it and building it will take years. Relations still have to improve quite a bit. It's an optimistic sign.
