Former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke Calls GOP Majority Whip Scalise a ‘Fine Family Man’

Source: Mediaite

Here’s an endorsement House Majority Whip Steve Scalise probably wasn’t looking for and doesn’t want. In a comment to The Huffington Post, white nationalist and former Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan David Duke called the Republican congressman “a fine family man and a good person.”

Duke was responding to a recently unearthed story that revealed Scalise had given a keynote address at a 2002 event hosted by the neo-Nazi’s white supremacist group.

While Scalise’s office first said they were not sure if the congressman had spoken at the event, they admitted Monday that he had but does not endorse the group’s message. “He has never been affiliated with the abhorrent group in question,” spokeswoman Moira Bagley told the Washington Post. “The hate-fueled ignorance and intolerance that group projects is in stark contradiction to what Mr. Scalise believes and practices as a father, a husband, and a devoted Catholic.”

But even as Scalise is working hard to distance himself from the neo-Nazis, Duke apparently has no problem endorsing him.

Not to mention the part about devout Catholics not associating with monsters?

Can not believe this man can remain as the third most powerful racist in the House.

On the other hand, where do those durn lib'ruls get off calling Scalise, a guy who vigourously opposed a MLK holiday passed overwhelmingly in his state legislature, after having supported and addressed a convention of neo-nazis and registered white nationalists headed by the most famous racist in America, a racist?!?

12. Majority Whip Steve Scalise Struggles To Distance Himself From David Duke

Duke and Scalise seem to have had plenty of agreements in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A January 1999 Roll Call story, unearthed by the blog Little Green Footballs from a listserv archive, suggests that Duke's claims about his mainstream role within the state Republican Party may not be far off. (Roll Call later posted the full story on its website.) The article, written by then-Roll Call reporter John Mercurio, detailed a special election for the U.S. House seat in Louisiana's 1st Congressional District. Duke, who had previously served as a state representative, was considering running, and Mercurio spoke to a number of his potential rivals, including Scalise:

Another potential candidate, state Rep. Steve Scalise (R), said he embraces many of the same "conservative" views as Duke, but is far more viable.

"The novelty of David Duke has worn off," said Scalise. "The voters in this district are smart enough to realize that they need to get behind someone who not only believes in the issues they care about, but also can get elected. Duke has proven that he can't get elected, and that's the first and most important thing."

A Scalise spokesperson did not immediately return The Huffington Post's request for comment on Duke's remarks and the Roll Call story.

"devoted Catholics" in my own family. (disclaimer: I was raised Catholic and do not mean what I'm about to post as being representative of ALL Catholics - this is just about my racist uncle). Uncle Joe could talk reverently about bishops and priests and the Church then switch to complaining about "jungle bunnies." I believe he worked in the court system in New Jersey.
