'Annie' Target Ads Criticized For Using Whites Instead Of Quvenzhané Wallis

The remake of the film "Annie" earned its star Quvenzhané Wallis a Golden Globe nomination, but that doesn't seem to matter to Target.
The retailer's customers have started a Change.org petition protesting the company's ads for its clothing collection based on the film. Supporters of the petition are criticizing Target for using white models in the in-store ads instead of the film's star, Quvenzhané Wallis, who is black. (Although the look book for the capsule collection features models of diverse backgrounds.)
So far, more than 6,000 people have signed the petition, which reads in part: Your recent Annie ads and in-store displays depicts (sic) a misleading depiction of the movie as it shows a Caucasian young lady opposed to the star of the filmQuvenzhané Wallis. Though the model is quite professional, she does not speak to the relevance of the movie or main character. When the original Annie came out, everything was about Aileen Quinn or a character/person that emulated her ... why not now Target? If you can show it online, show it in ALL of your stores with multiple signage with different girls not one!
The petition also demands that Target remove the in-store ads: We demand that you immediately pull those misleading ads and give Quvenzhané Wallis her due respect as well as other little girls who aspire to be like her. Being African American is not ugly, it is not bad and we are sellable! These grossly misleading ads are adding to the divide and does not give young African American girls aspiring to become actors anything to be optimistic about. Or show more diversity within your stores and depict a variety of races as you did with your online ads. Everyone does not have access to internet- plus the younger fans may not be allowed to use internet.
A rep for Target responded via New York magazine: At Target, we appreciate the opportunity to hear from our guests. We're proud of our Annie for Target collection, which was inspired by the recently released remake of the family classic and designed by the films costume designer...With regard to the marketing of the collection, girls from a variety of backgrounds were featured within the campaign, reflecting that anyone can embody the spirit and character of Annie. As for the involvement of Quvenzhane Wallis, we had conversations with her team about being in the campaign, but ultimately it did not come to fruition. Fortunately, we had the pleasure of working with Ms. Wallis a number of times, including appearances at Targets sales meeting in September and a launch event in New York City in November. We had a great experience working with Ms. Wallis and appreciate her efforts in promoting this collection.

(18,791 posts)Before I side with the hysterical demands for an apology...just show me the blatant racist plan for the sales campaign...versus that someone working in it out of a cubicle, that didn't even know about the race of the lead actress or really anything about the show.
Personally I've never thought that African Americans are ugly OR non-sellable.

(406 posts)It's essentially the Fox Formula; some bastard looking to make a name for his or herself. It's not exclusive to only white individuals, you know.
More importantly, this very formula severely diminishes the aspect when there is true racism such as with Eric Garner or John Crawford III.

(45,319 posts)for clothing ads at Target is in fact a tad beneath her. Were she my friend, child or client I would not want her to be in such ads and I would not really care for people assuming she would wish to be a clothing model. When Target says 'conversations that did not come to fruition' I assume that means 'we asked and her people laughed at us' which is what they should have done.

(22,000 posts)The people who are signing the petition complaining are assuming they know what happened behind the scenes. They don't. I will sign 9/10 petitions on Change.org as I'm a big believer in what effect the appropriate pressure put on an individual, organization, or company can have. On this one though is that 1/10.

(25,704 posts)Lil AA was a child model like those depicted in these ads. We have a folder with her work. She was a Ford Model, until she decided not to do it anymore.
What the client wants most are mixed race models, ie ethnicly ambiguous. Lil AA is biracial. You can sell to more people that way. A lot of those girls are like that.
Also, sometimes the client exerts a lot of control over the ads. It may be the movie producers made the ad.

(50,559 posts)According to her Wikipedia page, Quvenzhané Wallis is the "face" of Armani's Junior line - no, I didn't know they had one either. It's highly doubtful that Armani wants the face of their $165 rayon dresses to be selling the highly pedestrian Target clothes.

(58,724 posts)"Your recent Annie ads and in-store displays depicts a misleading depiction of the movie as it shows a Caucasion young lady opposed to the star of the film- Quvenzhané Wallis."
Quvenzhané Wallis was asked to appear in the ads but declined. Therefore, they did not have the rights to use her likeness in the ads.
"why would Target singlehandedly disrespect Quvenzhané Wallis ..."
Clueless.
