Source: BBC
A rescue operation is under way after a car transporter ship ran aground in the Solent, off the Isle of Wight.
The ship was on its way to Germany when it ran on to the Brambles bank, in the entrance to Southampton Water, at about 21:30 GMT, the RNLI said.
The ship's crew of 25 are being rescued from the water and onboard the vessel, which is listing at 45 degrees.
Four RNLI Lifeboats as well as the Solent Coastguard Helicopter are involved in the rescue.

(3,746 posts)A major search operation has been launched after a vessel overturned off the north of Scotland.
Eight people are reported to have been on board the Cypriot-registered Cemfjord, a cargo ship carrying cement.
The upturned hull was found by a passing ferry in the Pentland Firth.
The search has now been called off for the night, but the Maritime and Coastguard Agency says a tug will still illuminate the area and warn shipping, until the operation resumes on Sunday.

(101,321 posts)The first anyone knew there was something wrong was the ferry spotting the upturned ship. The one in the Solent is within sight of a coastguard centre and close to multiple lifeboat stations, and is just a question of a mechanical failure causing the ship to leave the channel and hit a sandbank (on which they play cricket once a year):
One person is believed to have suffered a broken leg.
The Captain and First Officer are to remain on board the vessel, however all other crew members have been taken to safety. It is believed the huge cargo ship suffered a mechanical malfunction, swinging the ship around to port and onto Brambles Bank.

(26,602 posts)These two, the ferry fire plus two abandoned migrant ships in the Mediterranean, a sunken ferry in DR Congo (if we include fresh waters) - it's been a bad couple of weeks...

The ship is believed to have sunk off the north of Scotland. There has been no sign of the eight-strong crew.

Searchers have been concentrating their efforts on areas of coastline where debris may have been washed ashore.
An inflatable boat was recovered by a team in Orkney, but the coastguard said they have been unable to confirm if it came from the Cemfjord.

(30,745 posts)some people may be left aboard to help with future salvage operations.
How can that be safe?

(101,321 posts)The problem is going to be refloating it - they're gogin to try at high water, about an hour from now. However, the Daily Mail says "three crew members who remained on board the vessel to assist with salvage operations have also been airlifted off the vessel".

(2,941 posts)or is it bouy just put in place to warn other vessels?
muriel_volestrangler
(101,321 posts)but the tracking system does show it turned around a marker buoy - the malfunction.
The pink diamond is, I think, the west cardinal buoy for Brambles Bank.

(101,321 posts)The Hoegh Osaka was run aground off the Isle of Wight on Saturday evening after developing problems once it had left Southampton, Ingar Skiaker, chief executive of Hoegh Autoliners said.
The ship is now listing at more than 50 degrees and a salvage operation is expected to take several days.
...
Mr Skiaker said: "We know the vessel was leaving Southampton with some cargo on board and while navigating out of the channel she apparently had a list.
"The captain and master and the pilot on board decided jointly to put the vessel on the sandbank to avoid any more serious problems.
"I think they executed their duties based on their best judgement and we're not second-guessing their actions right now.
