Passengers complain of 12-hour wait on tarmac
Source: Associated Press
Hundreds of air travelers landed in San Francisco, safe but irritated after a 28-hour overseas flight they say included 12 hours on a tarmac in the Middle East without food or accurate flight information.
Tempers grew short on Etihad Airways Flight 183 when fog in the city of Abu Dhabi delayed takeoff for a half-day, passengers told San Francisco broadcaster KGO.
"They kept telling us that we were going to leave, you know 15 minutes from now, 20 minutes from now, 30 minutes for now, for 12 hours," passenger Thomas Piani told reporters in San Francisco after finally landing in the city on Saturday evening.

"No one was angry about the delay itself. If it's unsafe to fly, we don't want to fly," she said. "It just didn't seem to make any logical sense why we had to stay on the plane."

This would drive me literally insane! And I am quite sure I would be arrested because of it.

i can maybe even understand it getting 2 hours. but you would think after 3, 5 ,7 + hours they would just let them off .

(12,769 posts)I really hate flying anyway. There can be no good excuse for keeping passengers locked up as if they were in jail. Yet, complain too much and you end up in one.
If lawmakers had to travel in the same seats as the rest of us, they would get the point.

(16,020 posts)I would have been a basket case after 30 minutes. They seem to always turn off the air when you have to sit on the tarmac and it gets unbearably hot and stuffy.

Yes - absolutely, these US citizens have a right to complain!

(12,769 posts)I bet nobody worldwide likes being forced to stay in an extremely limited and unhealthy environment for 12 hours longer than necessary for absolutely no good reason. But if you have some people that like doing so please feel free to post their comments.
I take it you don't mind the inconvenience but I also bet you have never experienced it.
And what the hell does w.r.t. mean?

(12,769 posts)in the Middle East is horrific. And that any complaints we have may seem to pale by comparison.
But being trapped on an airplane is one of my biggest fears and I don't believe anyone, anywhere should be subjected to it for longer than absolutely necessary.
I also don't believe that anyone anywhere should ever have had to suffer from the terrible things we did to the Middle East (based upon obvious lies) and still are doing.

We need to speak up against inhumanity wherever and whenever it occurs. And this may not be a bid deal to you but I assure you, it is to others.

(22,000 posts)Overseas flights are a fucking pain in the ass. I live abroad so I end up having to take them if I want to go anywhere. In fact I'm headed south next week.
Realistically after 2 1/2 to 3 hours if the fog didn't clear they should remove everyone from the plane and let them back into the terminal, then feed them and let them use the regular bathrooms (not the shitty small ones on the plane) and stretch their feet. Bring in some cots and pillows and let the passengers rest if they are going to be stuck there. I know that most airports have these as a contingency for a variety of purposes.

(15,882 posts)From today's news.
I try to remember that some people may have it worse than I do that day.
How much money does one have to have to be inconvenienced on the tarmac of one of the most expensive cities in the world? Seems they could have bought a pillow and some water, slept or something. First class could have shared.
"Passengers said the flight crew told them the Abu Dhabi airport was too crowded with other stranded flights to allow them to get off the plane to wait.
...
The airline told The Associated Press in a statement that "unprecedented fog" had delayed flights, caused airport congestion and Flight 183 was one of the planes most affected."
An unprecedented weather event caused overcrowding. Possibly not in the terminal, but a bunch of jets rolling around on a foggy runway doesn't sound like a safe thing either, nor does letting the passengers off on the runway and telling them "good luck, the terminal is more or less thataway".
Pretty easy to armchair criticize their actions, but I have seen a busy airport get hit with a thick fog, and suddenly a lot of very deadly stuff can still be moving but without a really clear idea of what they are heading for.

(94,604 posts)...too many planes had diverted, and there wasn't room in the terminal. Somehow we survived.

(26,060 posts)after flying for 8 coming home from Paris (on a flight delayed leaving CDG 3 hours). MAJOR snowstorm the day before left the airport without enough personnel to deal with the international flights. They also couldn't take the luggage off the plane because they needed someone from Air France there for that and there was nobody. Didn't get my luggage until the following week when I went to JFK to get it - this is after flying business class. Yeah, we survived but it was a hellish trip (followed by no car services running at the airport and we had an industrious fellow charge us $90 apiece to get to Manhattan).

(18,791 posts)Airlines don't give a crap about their Flight Attendants but I can hardly believe that the Pilots were allowed to fly after such a delay.
I also never understand why an empty aircraft is not pushed off a gate, so that another can offload...at least the passengers that want can go home (if they are local).
In the U.S. there are finally regulations that will cost the airlines big money if they hold people too long (3 hours?)...they must be allowed off.
