Bess Myerson, 90, Dies; Famed for Beauty, Public Service and Scandal

Bess Myerson, a New York favorite daughter who basked in the public eye for decades — as Miss America 1945, as a television personality, as a force in public affairs and finally, under a harsher light, as a player in a shattering municipal scandal — died on Dec. 14 at her home in Santa Monica, Calif., her death occurring in the relative obscurity in which she had lived her last years. She was 90.

Her death, which had not been publicly announced, was confirmed on Monday by public records.

and that famous live commercial where she couldn't get the top freezer door open and had to ad-lib the part about it. Another part of the past disappearing. RIP

I believe it was a GE top freezer. The door seal locked because it had previously just been opened and Bess couldn't yank it open. It was a live commercial . Bless her, she did a good job anyway.

I use to watch reruns of it when it was on some game show network just a few years ago.
