BREAKING: John Boehner Retains Position As House Speaker Despite Some GOP Opposition
Source: Huffington Post
WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to again make John Boehner its speaker, handing the Ohio Republican the gavel for the third time despite a late challenge by dissatisfied members of his own party. Tuesday's vote saw the most votes against a sitting speaker since 1923.
Boehner received the votes of 216 House members, while House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) received 164 votes. A number of discontented Republicans, however, voted for other candidates, including Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.), who, with 12 votes, got the most opposition votes from the GOP.
Boehner's caucus unanimously chose him to be the speaker just after November's elections. However, the Ohio Republican soon faced a rebellion from conservative members who were angry that he pushed through a government spending bill in December that didn't extract concessions from President Barack Obama on immigration or the Affordable Care Act.
The full House of Representatives votes for the new speaker at the start of a new Congress.

Gomer didn't even manage to come in second on the GOP side. Another teabagger failure.
That Palin endorsement did as much good for him as the time she and her husband Taaad backed Newt in Alaska's presidential primary (He came in last)

(27,315 posts)there would have been a second ballot.
I certainly hope Obama is ready to use executive action, because if you thought the 113th Congress was bad, the 114th will be even worse.

(42,714 posts)There are, I believe, 18 Democratic members of the House from New York. There were 408 votes cast for Speaker. Assuming all 18 were absent (a pretty good assumption), their presence would have raised the number of votes cast to 426; a majority would be 214. Boehner got 216, so he still wins.
I haven't seen a breakdown of what other members did not vote.

(27,315 posts)More than 10% of the delegation voted against him.
The magic number was 217, so he got less than half Congress. A very bad result, which weakens him even more, and it is not as if the rest of the leadership was strong.

(42,714 posts)If he had, he would have had 217 votes. Plus four other repubs didn't vote, and at least one of them (Young of AK) almost certainly would have voted for Boehner. (The other three, Carter, Gowdy and Nunnelee all voted for Boehner in 2013, but they're Carter and Gowdy clearly would not have supported him this time; Nunnelee is harder to predict -- he didn't vote because he was in the hospital).
20 Democrats didn't vote, but only 13 were from New York.
Bottom line: it was a bad showing for Boehner, but only marginally worse than in 2013, when he only got 220 votes (and needed 214).

(24,703 posts)Oh boy we get (2) more years of right wing hypocrisy and a drunk, golfer and a guy that goes to KK meetings and another two years of a DO NOTHING CONGRESS more----- .
I would like to know when they go on vacation again, next week before the state of the union for two more weeks, or just a continuation of where the orange guy that drinks a lot left off from last year.
All I know is that if I came into work drunk, not only would I have to go EAP, but I could lose my license, how does this person get away passing laws that don't apply to him or anyone else -----amazing.
Thanks Ohio, I can revisit the BOZO the Clown show in 2015 and beyond now that this right wing Congress has been gerrymandered into office
