Gunman who shot dead policewoman on run in France

Montrouge (France) (AFP) - A gunman shot dead a policewoman and seriously hurt a city employee just outside Paris on Thursday, spooking a city already reeling from a massacre at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The man, who wore a bullet-proof vest and carried a handgun and automatic rifle, was still on the run after committing the attack in Montrouge just south of Paris, which prosecutors said they were treating as a terror act.

But there were so far no indications that the incident was linked to Wednesday's Islamist attack in the Paris office of Charlie Hebdo that left 12 dead -- a maintenance worker, prominent journalists and cartoonists, a visitor and two policemen.

Security forces detained a man soon after the Montrouge shooting but he was not the shooter, police said. They then raided a hotel room nearby but that was unsuccessful. "We lost track of the alleged attacker in the La Defense area (business district next to Paris)," a police source said.

The OP links to an Australian news source for something happening in Paris France.

I suppose it's all possible these days, with the internet, but there are actually English language news sources in Paris, and, of course, in London, too, much closer to the events than somewhere in Australia.

Why is the OP linking to a news source half way around the world from Paris?

It supplies English language reports as well as French ones. And they don't normally put all their reports up on their own site - you have to go to a paper or TV channel that subscribes to them. It happens to be "The West Australian" via Yahoo in this case.

other languages.

To quote:

Agence France-Presse is an international news agency headquartered in Paris. It is the oldest news agency in the world and one of the largest.

They even have an English language Youtube Channel, where most of their videos are dubbed over in English.

I was just remarking about the source, when there are many English language sources a little closer to Paris than western Australia. Of course, the Yahoo New service just copies and pastes links, they are not a real news outfit and don't pretend to be, (like Faux Noose).

Just thought it was interesting that the on-line link was to some news compiler in western Australia.

I probably should not have even commented. I'm an old person who somehow thinks the world is very small these days, and I love Australia, but find it strange that a link comes from there and not from Paris. I realize it was just an on-line link, and the actual text had originated in Paris.
