DAD ACCUSED OF TOSSING GIRL OFF BRIDGE CALLED LAWYER 'GOD'

Source: AP-Excite

BY TAMARA LUSH

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Just 12 hours before police said John Jonchuck threw his 5-year-old daughter off a bridge - perhaps while she was still alive - the father calmly told a sheriff's deputy he didn't want to hurt himself or his little girl and had "new clarity in his life."

The officer had made a point of interviewing Jonchuck in person because Jonchuck's own attorney frantically called 911 to report that he was acting "strange." The attorney, Genevieve Torres, said Jonchuck had called her "God" and asked her to translate a Bible in Swedish when they met Wednesday to talk about Jonchuck's custody case for his daughter, Phoebe.

Yet, when police talked to Jonchuck at length, everything appeared OK.

Then police encountered Jonchuck again shortly after midnight Wednesday. He was going about 100 mph toward the Sunshine Skyway bridge. By the time an officer caught up with him, Jonchuck had pulled over on the approach span to the bridge.

FULL story at link.

When an attorney calls the cops on his own client, I think the cops ought to take it very, very seriously.

Their incompetence caused the death of that girl.

If this guy was controlled enough to act and sound sane, what were the cops to do? Arrest him because his atty. said he was weird?

What would they have charged him with?

to detain a person. A reason that usually contains the word "immediate." Had they been able to trump up a reason to detain him and he had been assessed and managed to maintain the "all is well" front, he would then be in front of the media, with full support of many on DU, claiming that an innocent father was being harrassed by police and CPS.

I've worked for CPS, I know the drill. It's a system based frequently on trying to determine what a person might do in the future and then convincing judges, police, etc. Judges who, in most cases, do not work the street and don't know what goes on out there.

services, he was on medications, there were other child protective services interactions. The child was probably terrified of "Daddy"

Police found him a short time later at a church, and everything seemed fine. He told officers he was once on 37 different medicines for a variety of ailments, but none this week. He said he had recently lost weight and was eating healthy, "trying to better his life."

that he had a string of domestic violence charges.

I will look for a link.

Updated: http://www.ajc.com/news/news/national/police-girl-5-dies-after-being-thrown-bridge-st-pe/njjLc/

"Orlando TV station WFTV reported Jonchuck has a long criminal history: He was arrested on battery and domestic violence charges on May 23, 2010. Jonchuck allegedly battered the victim, Michelle Kerr.

On May 26, 2013, he was charged with battery. Jonchuck was arrested for battering Kerr during an argument that escalated to a physical confrontation.

Oct. 25, 2013, he was charged with forgery. Jonchuck was accused of forging Kerr's, checks. She ultimately signed a waiver not to prosecute.

Nov. 6, 2013, he was charged with battery. Jonchuck was accused of battering his mother, Michele Jonchuck, during the course of an argument."

There is one more but I don't want to exceed the graph limit.
