North Korea Seems to Be Closer to Missile-Launching Submarine

North Korea has displayed its cyberattack capabilities and advances toward making nuclear warheads, the countrys adversaries say. Now, the North appears to have shown progress in fitting submarines with missile launchers.
A report posted Thursday on the website of 38north, a prominent research group that focuses on North Korea, said commercial satellite imagery of a North Korean submarine, taken less than a month ago, indicates the vessel may have one or two vertical launching tubes for either ballistic or cruise missiles.
The submarine, first seen in July, could be a test bed for underwater missile launching, which would be harder to detect than land-based launchers, the report said. It was written by Joseph S. Bermudez Jr., an arms expert and authority on North Koreas defense capabilities.

On Tuesday, South Koreas Defense Ministry said the North appeared to have made a significant advance toward perfecting a nuclear warhead small enough to fit on a long-range missile that could reach the American West Coast. The ministry also suggested the North possessed a missile that could fly that far.

(79 posts)Not at you but the idea that they have the ability. I have seen the submarines they are using, we are talking 40 year old technology.

At the same time, I am deeply skeptical that North Korea will have the ability to do this anytime soon. They have yet to demonstrate that they have a land-based missile system capable of delivering a nuclear payload. Also, to my knowledge, the North Koreans are still using liquid fueled missiles. Submarine launched missiles pretty much HAVE TO be solid fueled. North Korea is years from that point.

I have been very interested in this given I live in South Korea. It's hard to know how much of their technology they show off is fake (the cardboard missiles in parades are obvious) and how much is real. They have had limited success with missile launches, but the one thing they lack is the resources unless they are getting them from other places (Russia, China, Iran, Pakistan or Syria).

(5,455 posts)1. I doubt they have they have a missile capable of reaching the West Coast, much less are able to put into a submarine, the only known submarine they have large enough and with enough range would be the Romeo class
submarine which is 1950's technology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romeo-class_submarine
2. This hypothetical submarine with 1950's technology would be facing the larger, faster, quieter diesel-electric submarines of South Korea and Japan and the U.S. nuclear subs in addition to the surface and aviation forces of those countries.
3. I certainly wouldn't put it past South Korea, Japan or the U.S. to arrange an "accident" if the NK sub made it out into the open ocean where there wouldn't be anyone around to witness such an "accident". I'm not even sure that NK would even admit that the hypothetical submarine was even missing.
