Discovery channel new boss promises more 'authenticity'

Source: BBC News

The new president of the Discovery channel, Rich Ross, has promised a move away from sensationalist programming.

Many viewers regarded the network's recent "fake documentaries", including two on mermaids, as a betrayal of the network's science roots

Speaking about the fake documentaries - including titles such as Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives - Ross, said he didn't think they were "right for Discovery Channel, and I think it's something that has run its course.

"They've done very well… but I don't think it's something that's right for us."

Well, that certainly is refreshing. Maybe there's hope that we can start learning stuff on The Learning Channel again, other than how learning much money it costs to debase one's self and one's family in a brainless reality show.

This is a little off-topic, but I really like that show. I don't pretend to have the best taste in reality TV, however I found the second episode of the new season really compelling. It followed the trip cocaine makes, from its cultivation in Peru to an L.A. party scene. Sensationalist, sure, but well-produced stuff.
