We are at war against terrorism, not Islam, French PM says

Source: Agence France Presse

Paris (AFP) - Prime Minister Manuel Valls told members of parliament Tuesday that France was at "war with terrorism, jihadism and radicalism", in the wake of the country's bloodiest attacks in half a century.

"France is not at war against Islam and Muslims," stressed Valls, after three gunmen claiming to represent extremist jihadist groups killed 17 people in three days that terrorised the country.

Valls announced a series of measures that will "draw on the lessons" from last week's attacks, including creating "specific quarters" for jihadists in prison.

Two of the gunmen in last week's attacks met in prison and remained in close contact. One of them claimed that the attacks were coordinated.

The French PM received a standing ovation after this speech.

Radicalization of prisoners discussed at Canadian roundtable

Canada's correctional service quietly hosted an international roundtable and symposium last month on how to deal with the radicalization of prison inmates, an alarming trend raising concern in France and around the world in the wake of last week's attacks in Paris.

Don Head, commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), got approval from Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney to fly in participants from other parts of Canada and from the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Israel, France, Spain and the Netherlands at a cost of about $63,000, according to a briefing note obtained by CBC News through Access to Information.

The issue of radicalization behind bars is on the global radar after revelations that two gunmen involved in last week’s attacks in France are believed to have been radicalized in prison.

Citing security reasons, CSC would not disclose the number of radicalized offenders now in custody, but said they can be involved in a wide range of behaviours and activities that support extreme political, religious or ideological objectives or causes, including global jihad, terrorist financing or extreme political militantism.

The calm of Obama continues to drive them madder and madder and closer to the cliff when everyone will see them for what they have become.

I mean, is it not obvious from your history of posting that you prefer Putin-style society to American society? But I still don't get how you twist the OP into yet another bash on the US. FOX has embarrassed itself, much like your RT does after major incidents that provoke them--but besides that, again WTF are you talking about?

I'm tired of the irrational bullshit since 911. You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than any real act of terrorism.

This mounting conflict is occurring not so much because of NATO’s 2011 intervention, which was limited to airstrikes, but because of its swift withdrawal and subsequent failure to assist in stabilizing the country. Without institutions or trained and loyal security forces, an interim government could not gain control over the numerous militias that had sprung up to fight the Gaddafi regime. As the situation has steadily worsened in the past two years, the Obama administration, France, Britain and other participants in the NATO intervention have reacted not by dispatching aid but by shutting down their embassies and washing their hands of Libya. The task of trying to broker peace has been handed to a U.N. mediator, Bernardino León, who in recent interviews has described his mission as quixotic.

As in Syria, this passivity could soon produce a serious threat to Western interests. According to the U.S. Africa Command, 200 jihadists linked to the Islamic State already have set up a training camp in the eastern Libyan town of Derna. Only 300 miles from southern Europe, Libya could — far more easily than Yemen or western Iraq — become the launching pad for more attacks on Paris and other Western capitals.
