Bus carrying prisoners involved in West Texas fatal wreck

Source: http://news.yahoo.com/bus-carrying-prisoners-invol

PENWELL, Texas (AP) — Law enforcement officials say a bus carrying 12 prisoners and three corrections officers fell from an overpass in West Texas and crashed onto train tracks below, killing an unspecified number of people.

Department of Public Safety trooper Shawn Baxter, who is en route to the scene west of Odessa near Penwell, could not confirm details Wednesday morning but said it was a fatal accident.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark says the DPS reported that a train may have collided with the bus or been struck by it after the bus fell from the overpass.

A spokeswoman says Medical Center Hospital in Odessa is treating five patients had no more information.

Update: 11:20 a.m. DPS Trooper Oscar Villarreal confirms 10 are dead. Fire department tells OA reporter Corey Paul that five were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A trooper was working a separate wreck ahead of the bus when the bus veered into the median for an unknown reason, perhaps ice, Villarreal said.

It crashed down an embankment between two overpasses and {hit} a passing train. It did not crash off an overpass as previously thought.

"It's as bad as you can imagine. In 32 years it's as bad as anything I've seen," Battalion Chief Kavin Tinney said at the scene.
