WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- President Obama told Congress to "hold your fire" on new Iran sanctions, saying Friday he will move quickly if the latest negotiations fall through.
In the meantime, the president said, he will veto any sanctions legislation Congress sends him. The president spoke at a joint news conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron, who said he is making calls to senators and adding his voice to Obama's.
Obama said he will make the case against additional sanctions now to U.S. voters.
"My main message to congress at this point is just hold your fire. Nobody around the world, least of all the Iranians, doubt my ability to get additional sanctions passed if these negotiations fail," Obama said.

Obama to Congress: 'Hold your fire' on Iran sanctions
Washington (CNN)President Barack Obama promised Friday to veto a plan by members of congress to issue additional sanctions on Iran while diplomatic negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear plan are under way.
"I will veto a bill that comes to my desk and i will make this argument to the American people as to why I'm doing so," Obama said at a joint press conference with United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron, referencing a plan supported by some in his own party to increase sanctions on Iran through Congress before a deal is reached by international negotiators.
"My main message to congress at this point is just hold your fire. Nobody around the world least of all the Iranians doubt my ability to get additional sanctions pass if these negotiations fail," Obama added later.
Cameron said he was also calling American senators and urging them not to pass additional sanctions.

President Obama reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) over Iran sanctions during Thursdays behind-closed-doors session at the Senate Democratic retreat.
Obama warned Menendez that he would veto a bill that would impose new financial penalties on Tehran if the the ongoing nuclear talks failed, according to a report in The New York Times.
The president, as he has in the past, argued that such a move could lead Iran to walk away from the negotiating table and result in the U.S. being blamed for the failure of the talks. And he reportedly suggested that senators supporting the legislation were doing so because of pressure from donors.
Menendez, for his part, warned that the White House was incorrect to suggest sanctions could be quickly turned back on if the talks collapsed. He also rejected the presidents call to take the long view on Irans nuclear program, noting he had worked on the issue for two decades.
Menendez and Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) are expected to introduce Iran legislation in the coming weeks, and new Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has promised to give the bill, which is expected to pass, a vote.

(79 posts)Sanctions are a good thing, war is a bad thing. Why would he not want sanctions from the repubs instead the drumbeat of war?

(27,509 posts) President Obama said the chances of a diplomatic deal with Iran are "probably less than 50/50."
But, he said, adding more sanctions would likely scuttle the deal and Iran would be "able to maintain that the reason they ended negotiations is because the U.S. was acting in bad faith."
