Police: Teen sweethearts blaze trail of crime across South

By BRUCE SCHREINER and DYLAN LOVAN, Associated Press | January 16, 2015 | Updated: January 16, 2015 3:43pm

LEITCHFIELD, Ky. (AP) — Police say two teenage sweethearts have blazed a trail of crime across the South, leaving in their path a string of stolen vehicles and pilfered checks and stirring concern about their increasingly bold behavior.

The 18-year-old and his 13-year-old girlfriend — who had apparently convinced the boy and his family that she was 19 — have so far eluded capture and are now believed to be cruising around in a stolen truck with two guns.

"There's going to come a time when we're not going to see him as an 18-year-old kid," said Norman Chaffins, sheriff in Grayson County, Kentucky, where the pair disappeared nearly two weeks ago.

"We're going to see him as someone who's stolen three vehicles with two handguns in them, and the outcome is not going to be good for either one of them if they don't turn themselves in."

You are correct.

Guess he's in for a surprise.

But, hey, I hear so much about how young people these days lack initiative. So, look at the upside.

Be that as it may, I am not familiar with the laws of Kentucky as it may pertain to age gaps among teens.

But, yes this guy is in deep shit, no matter how it is sliced.

It just appears to make the assertion. Interesting, too, the choice of 19 as opposed to 18.

In any case, she is a child. Not just a minor, but a child. And I think the man should be treated as a person who has abducted a child or worse if she has also been raped by him, which, if they have had sexual intercourse, she has since it is not possible for a child of her age to give consent for same.

Which is what I mean by "as wrote".

The story doesn't say they are engaging in sexual intercourse at all, so I don't see the point of standing on "evidence" cited therein to support either (a) his knowledge of her age, which is likely irrelevant, or (b) whether they are engaging in sexual intercourse.

Whether they are doing so, is not even merely asserted in the story, which is silent on that point.

The KY statute of relevance to that fact which you have assumed is:

510.050 Rape in the second degree.

(1) A person is guilty of rape in the second degree when:
(a) Being eighteen (18) years old or more, he engages in sexual intercourse with another person less than fourteen (14) years old; or
(b) He engages in sexual intercourse with another person who is mentally incapacitated.
(2) Rape in the second degree is a Class C felony.

That charge is likely the least of his legal problems.

Seems weird that there isn't a quote from one of the parents or something to actually provide at least a minimal amount of evidence to support that claim.

It seems hard to believe that an 18 year old male and 19 year old female (which is apparently how old she represented herself as being) are "sweethearts" who have not had sexual intercourse, but you are right to say that is just conjecture on my part.

I guess I am just annoyed (clearly) at the "teen sweethearts" descriptor used in the headline.

Donny Osmond - Age 14

It used to irritate my older siblings no end to have child performers like Donny Osmond or Michael Jackson singing love ballads.

The couple had been dating for about three months. The girl portrayed herself as being 19, and the family, including Martin's son, believed her, she said.

Cheyenne "would go in and write checks, and she would come out with cigarettes and stuff, so I didn't have any reason not to believe she wasn't 19. Because normally you can't buy cigarettes when you're 13 years old," Martin said.

By the time her son realized she was a mere 13, "he was already done in love with her," Martin said.

Makes it clear that he knew what he was doing before leaving with her, apparently.

I think the time, for purposes here, to stop seeing him as a "kid" was less than 12 months ago.

Missing Grayson County girl, boyfriend arrested in Florida

Authorities found the couple in Panama City Beach

Published 4:50 AM EST Jan 18, 2015

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. —The U.S. Marshals Service and local law enforcement in Panama City Beach, Florida discovered Cheyenne Phillips, 13, and Dalton Hayes, 18, inside a stolen 2001 Toyota Tundra Sunday morning.

Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins says the two were taken into custody without incident. They are now being extradited back to Kentucky.

Phillips was reported missing on Jan. 3. Authorities say she ran off with Hayes, her presumed boyfriend.

The two are accused of stealing vehicles and evading police for about 14 days.
