Cuomo to Propose 2 New Minimum Wages, for New York City and State

Source: New York Times

JAN. 18, 2015

Flanked by a collection of liberal groups and labor leaders, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Sunday announced a raft of proposals on social issues, among them a plan that would raise the minimum wage to $11.50 an hour in New York City and $10.50 an hour in the rest of the state.

If approved by the State Legislature, the proposal would make New York’s minimum wage among the highest in the country. But traditional Republican opposition in the State Senate, where that party holds a majority, makes the passage of such legislation far from assured.

Still, Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, seemed cautiously optimistic that an improving economy, including robust recent gains on Wall Street and the stock market, would make it easier to cut a deal.

The minimum wage hike was just one of 10 proposals that the governor unveiled on Sunday in advance of his State of the State address in Albany on Wednesday, including expansions in job programs for urban youth, additional funding for homeless services and low-income housing, and assistance for food programs.

....critters in both houses that are called "republicans".

On the other hand, being a native New Yorker who visits frequently, I don't see how anyone can survive in New York on $460 a week (or even $600 a week in Seattle)

Back in high school I was working part time in a department store on weekends. My first raise ever was when the minimum wage went from $1.15 an hour to $1.25 an hour.

Back when I started working in the late 70s, was $5 something in Illinois. $3 in all those decades is nothing.

Minimum wage is supposed to be a living wage. Whole reason for it was so people could survive. I think they should have a law that no one in a company can make more than 10x anyone else in a company, including bonuses and other incentives. And still have a minimum of at least $20 pee hour.

Someone is working on a critter spray. Problem is making it non toxic

. . . $11.50 an hour is laughable.

Here's the way I think the issue should be framed for Republicans: if you want to reduce the appeal of people earning money via illicit activities, the first thing you must do is make it possible to make a living via licit employment.

Isn't that ridiculous? When I was getting benefits briefly in late 2001, it was $405, and that was a joke even then.

"An empire is a geographically extensive group of states and peoples (ethnic groups) united and ruled by a central authority, either by a monarch (emperor, empress) or an oligarchy. The term empire is derived from the Latin term imperium (a rule, a command; authority, control, power; supreme power, sole dominion; military authority; a dominion, realm) from imperare (to command)" (Source Wikipedia)

I personally think it's a tacky slogan and preferred the "I Love" and "Big Apple"

Obviously didn't read all that. Still, compared to NYC, it's a much better minimum wage.

The $15.00 wage will be phased in, assuming powerful interests don't manage to have it overturned.
Corporations that employ more than 500 workers will have to pay $15 an hour by 2017 if their employees don’t receive company-paid health care. Smaller businesses can wait until 2019 to reach the higher rate. All workers will receive the wage by 2021.

But proposing $11.50 as a goal? Thanks very little.
