Hollande approval rate doubles in wake of Paris terror attacks

French voters approval of their president has jumped by a staggering 21%, according to a survey published on Monday, in the highest leap in polling history.
IFOP polling institute said President François Hollandes approval rate had more than doubled, from 19% to 40%, in the wake of the deadly terrorist attacks against satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket in Paris.
Hollande has been unusually prominent since the January 7 assault on Charlie Hebdo, personally directing the response to Frances deadliest attacks in half a century.
The three-day terror spree, in which 17 people were killed, prompted a rare display of national unity, with politicians of all stripes closing ranks in defiance of the terrorist threat.
It also triggered an outpouring of international support, which culminated in a mass rally in Paris attended by close to two million people, including the leaders of more than 40 countries.

And, he didn't even have to yell through a bull-horn at the Charlie Hebdo crime scene...!
He and Emmanuel Valls, the Prime Minister, are credited with striking the 'ton juste' during these traumatizing events--exhibiting unifying leadership without tipping over into chest-thumping bellicosity (à l'américaine).

But, that's the French way--everyone is calling for a calm, reasoned response, and cautioning against over-reaction à l'américaine.

With the French press and public being "en garde" against excesses à l'américaine, I expect him to proceed with caution.

these types of approval bumps rarely last, and any new incidents could actually cause a precipitous approval decline, and his leadership after the Hebdo and Kosher grocery attacks do not reflect new confidence in his economic policies, which were blamed for his prior atrocious polling numbers.
I imagine that Hollande will try to continue to focus on more popular anti-terrorism and foreign policy matters in order to maintain some of the approval bump, and pray mightily that his approval never returns to his abysmal 19% before the attacks. If anyone thinks he will try to use his new still under majority approval to push socialist economic policies that originally killed his approval numbers, I expect them to be very disappointed.

(15,445 posts)has had such abysmal numbers since polling began.
True enough, his improved ratings in no way reflect increased confidence in his administration's management of the economy.

(1,990 posts)but Bush used his to carry him to re-election. Sigh.
I don't know why someone's approval goes up when one doesn't do anything to merit it. Sigh again.
