Ukraine: Phone calls prove rebels attacked city, killed 30

Source: AP-Excite

By YURAS KARMANAU

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's president said Sunday that intercepted radio and telephone conversations prove that Russia-backed separatists were responsible for firing the rockets that pounded the southeastern city of Mariupol and killed at least 30 people.

The attack on Mariupol, a strategically situated port city that had been relatively quiet for months, alarmed the West and looked likely further to aggravate relations with Russia.

Putting the blame squarely on Moscow, President Barack Obama said the U.S. would work with its European partners to "ratchet up the pressure on Russia."

European Union foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini later announced that EU foreign ministers would hold an "extraordinary" meeting in Brussels on Thursday to discuss Ukraine.

FULL story at link.

Indiscriminate rocket fire slammed into a market, schools, homes and shops Saturday in Ukraine's southeastern city of Mariupol, killing at least 30 people, authorities said. The Ukrainian president called the blitz a terrorist attack and NATO and the U.S. demanded that Russia stop supporting the rebels. (AP Photo/Evgeniy Maloletka)

say the same thing

Evidence indicates that separatist forces were responsible for this attack: the Grad rockets struck government-controlled territory, the craters and rocket remnants stuck in the ground clearly indicate that the rockets came from due east, the direction of the frontline, and a rebel leader announced today that the rebel attack on Mariupol has begun in revenge for an attack Thursday that killed 13 people in a trolleybus in rebel-controlled Donetsk.

The SMM conducted a crater analysis and its initial assessment showed that the impacts were caused by Grad and Uragan rockets. According to the impact analysis, the Grad rockets originated from a north-easterly direction, in the area of Oktyabr (19 km north-east of Olimpiiska Street), and the Uragan rockets from an easterly direction, in the area of Zaichenko (15 km east of Olimpiiska Street), both controlled by the “Donetsk People’s Republic” (“DPR”).

After all, the Ukrainians are always thoroughly reliable when reporting on the civil war in their country's east:

Ukraine's Defense Minister Valery Geletei. (RIA Novosti)

. . .

Valery Geletey, who has served as the country’s Defense Minister since July 3, 2014, filed a resignation report back on Friday. He has recently faced harsh criticism over Kiev’s anti-terrorist operation failures in south-east Ukraine, particularly in Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

Earlier in August, hundreds of protesters in Kiev, many of whom were mothers and wives of the soldiers involved in the fighting in Donetsk and Lugansk, demanded Geletey’s resignation.

As a Defense Minister he has also been part of several scandals. Geletey threatened to file a law suit against Yulia Timoshenko, who accused him in selling weapons to militants in Donetsk and Lugansk.

In September, he also accused Russia of using tactical nuclear weapons against Kiev army fighters.

The Putin fan club always shows up pretty quick. I guess they think maybe one day we'll all learn that Russia has always been interested in peace and protecting the innocent. Because the Ukraine is obviously a HUGE threat to world peace, right?
Although I dont see other countries complaining about being scared of the Ukrainians........

This whole thing is a USA operation. If you haven't caught on to that by now, you haven't been paying attention. Not even a little bit.

Again, no one is scared of the Ukraine. A lot of countries are scared of Russia. For good reason. All you need to do is listen to what Putin himself says and does. But go ahead and blame the US, thats always popular

my post said nothing about Putin, yet some are so obsessed by him that they must mention his name on every possible occasion.

But I guess you really believe its just an "uprising" with no Russian involvement at all. Never mind the fact that it only started after Ukraine said they were going to complete their deals with the EU. Or that Russia agree to leave them alone in exchange for them giving up their nukes.
