New York City mayor: 'Don't underestimate this storm'

Source: CNN

A monster snowstorm is expected to slam into the Northeast on Monday and Tuesday, dumping what could be up to 3 feet of snow in Boston and New York, along with freezing rain and strong gusts possibly reaching hurricane level. The storm is expected to hit northern New Jersey through southern Connecticut and freeze Rhode Island and parts of Massachusetts.

By 5 p.m. ET Sunday, storm warnings had stretched to the Canadian border.

"I want everyone to understand that we are facing -- most likely -- one of the largest snowstorms in the history of this city," said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

on Christmas Eve, December, 1982. We had 36 inches of snow over 2 days and we were stuck for a week in our apartment. A blinding blizzard where the snow was falling sideways and never seemed to end. Those Colorado winters are truly amazing!

living in Denver couldn't get there! After the snow had settled it was still hard to get around but I hitchhiked to Idaho Springs because I wanted to go in the Hot Springs there. I was intrepid back then.

you were talking about. I have experienced snowstorms living in New England and New York, but that one was a doozy. I remember only 4 wheel drives were out and about in the first few days and I had a rear wheel Olds Cutlass that got stuck quite a few times in the ruts that the 4 wheel drives created. What a pain in the tush it was to get around. We were living in Northglenn close to 104th at the time and we were lucky to have a mini mart across the field from our apartments. Getting there was tricky though-trudging through waist high snow to get milk and other necessities was not a thrilling experience.

That was it.. only 4 wheel drives were out.. it was so white and pristine. I don't even remember how I got back. lol

we lived in Denver two separate times-1976 and 1982-Jan 1983. I found a job selling insurance but the ex couldn't find a decent job, so we left to go back east to Connecticut. I see from your profile that you now live in Kaua'i. We stayed in Kaua'i on our honeymoon in 1991(a timeshare in Princeville)-I loved it there and would retire there in a heartbeat if hubby didn't have kids and grandkids here in VA Beach. I'm jealous! We intend to visit within the next couple of years. A very magical place.

Took us 5 years to rebuild.. but, now yeah, it's all grown back and beautiful!

I was born and raised in Denver.. but left right after high school. Came back in '92 to live for 2 years to hang out around my Mom.. and then left for Kauai the first time.. lots of moving around and back and forth.. like you!

I was projecting for him.

He generally doesn't know what weather fate will befall him until he gets outside.

Happy and excited, then he sees the pouring rain or the deep snow.

Harshes his buzz.

Blizzard Bonanza: NYC May Get Two Feet Of Snow This Week

The pittance of snow that deigned to fall on NYC this weekend was but an appetizer compared to the feast that lies ahead. According to breathless meteorologists and terrified weather services, NYC and the tri-state area is expected to be hit with a blizzard early this week that could bring anywhere from 1-2 feet of snow to the city. You know what this means.

Got the lantern out, the handcranked flashlights and plenty of batteries for my portable ipod speakers, everything charged to full. Plenty of food for me and the cats. Hearing words like epic, historical, monster. Without a doubt the weirdest thing is that on Saturday morning, there was virtually nothing being said about this storm - just some light snow forecast for today. It was as the day went on that (I guess) things started getting together and the forecasts started getting worse and worse and worse still. This isn't storm we've been watching for a week.

I just want to get home today before the commuter trains crap out. I suspect the office will be closed tomorrow but I'm staying home whether it's officially open or not. If we get 2+ feet, it may be closed on Wed also. I was just saying what a wimpy winter it has been - this is my fault

Current expectation is that we will shut down buses, commuter rail and above-ground subway lines this evening -- POSSIBLY before PM rush. Likely to be out most of tomorrow until tracks/streets cleared. Underground lines should remain running, but local service only )express tracks will be used for storage).
