So ... Ted Nugent Threatened to Assassinate President Obama? - Updated: Secret Service Is On It
We're not sure how else to take this remark from the nutjob guitarist and Romney-endorser: "If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will be either be dead or in jail by this time next year."
Update: A spokesman for the Secret Service tells us, "We are aware of it, and we'll conduct an appropriate follow up."

THE SECRET SERVICE SAYS THEY ARE INVESTIGATING TED NUGENTS THREATENING REMARKS TOWARD OBAMA | Ted Nugents threatening remarks about President Obama at the annual National Rifle Association convention in St. Louis have earned him a follow-up conversation with the Secret Service. On Sunday, the singer remarked that if Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will be either be dead or in jail by this time next year. The Secret Service, which investigates all threats against the President, confirmed to New York Magazines Daily Intel blog that they have in fact flagged Nugents comment. We are aware of it, and well conduct an appropriate follow up, the agent told the magazine. Nugent endorsed Mitt Romney albeit reluctantly via Twitter last month, and at least one Romney, middle son Tagg, was excited about the news. (15,391 posts)Let me explain. Not a Nugent fan, but when I lived in Tulsa, Ted would routinely come through on the C-List tour of musicians, and he had just put out, "Kill It and Grill It." Being the nice liberal that I am, I decided to buy it for my brother-in-law who is also very conservative (but soft-spoken) as well as a hunter (both gun and bow). So my then-girlfriend at the time (who's Colombian) and I went to the Borders, talked smack in Spanish about all the nutjobs in line with us, and as Ted was signing my copy, I stuck my tongue out while my gf took a picture. He handed it to me and said, "Enjoy that pardner. There's a lot of wisdom in there." I kid you not, I injured myself stifling a laugh. I think Ted was a little confused in that within half a second, my expression went from more or less blank to mirth to pain. I had to take the elevator back down to the 1st floor and sit down on the sidewalk outside until the stitch went away. Then my gf and I went to a restaurant and read passages along the line of, "The point of life is to live, and if you're not living then you have no life."
Gave it to my brother-in-law a few weeks later for which he thanked me profusely. A couple weeks later, I saw him again and asked him if he enjoyed the book, and he sighed and said, "Jamie (still calls me that cuz I was a kid when he married my sister), at first, I thought it was just some kind of weird drug humor that I wasn't getting until I saw him on ESPN, and he really is that big of a dumb-ass. Recipes look good though."

I enjoyed reading it.
Sorry about the mirth to pain, but it gave you a good story to tell.

(18,641 posts)The problem is that, like most hate mongers, he may inspire someone to do the dirty work for him. I'm sure that'll be the focus of any conversation with The Service.
Someday, someone will do something horrible and openly admit they got their call to action from Nugent, Hannity, or Limbaugh. Such an act should spawn legislation that limits how such people speak to the weak minded masses. I know that's a 1st amendment issue, but there's a difference between stating how much one hates someone and suggesting violent action.
Funny that the people who follow him so religiously wouldn't be able to stand five minutes of his music. He opened for Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Double Trouble about ten years ago, and his show is a horrible spectacle of out of place extended guitar solos and pointed hate speech.

(18,641 posts)He's a career poser who gained peak fame through the song "Journey To The Center Of The Mind". The song was an anthem of mine at a time when LSD was just hitting the mainstream. A few hundred trips later, he proclaimed fans like me "hopeless idiots" and insisted he never used drugs in his life.
Now I'm not saying I didn't have a good time, but it was a clear indicator of the kind of opportunistic sell-out phony he is, and I wouldn't believe a word that comes out of the man's mouth. Ted Nugent says whatever is good for Ted Nugent at the time.
He and Mitt have that in common, so it's little wonder they shared the news cycle today.

(47,992 posts)The RNC talks Plausible Deniability out-of-both-sides-of-their-mouths:
TTE, "The RNC can't make Nugent do or not do anything. He has a right to his views. Even if his choice of how to express himself is radical, everyone knows not to take him literally." In the next breath Republicans will extoll the DIVINE VIRTUES of the ultimate, life-or-death, commitment to VALUES, the UNNECESSARY war on Iraq comes to mind, as does also the murder of George Tiller, the shootings at Gabriel Gifford's rally ("Innocent people hurt? Well, shit happens.), and so-called "Stand your ground" gun laws.
All of which demonstrates that all of us SHOULD INDEED take Ted Nugent very VERY seriously, because he is speaking to REAL people willing and capable of hurting others, even if most of them don't engage in direct physical violence, they do take such HATE SPEECH, from celebrities especially, as A BLESSING on anyone to get a buzzzz on for _____________ by acting their delusions out. Nugent/Limbaugh et al speak to those who NEEEEED to find meaning in the struggles of daily life, or just to people operating on knee-jerk reflexes. Pseudo-spiritual DELUSIONS are extremely fertile grounds for violence at ALL levels.
My point here is that Republicans are schizophrenic: they say Nugent's behavior, and other such Republican behavior, does not matter - AND - they say that positions like this and its contingent behaviors ARE manifestations of one's VALUES, which they claim are from God, so acting upon one's values, just like WAR, is evidence of one's true relationship to the divine. IOW, certain behaviors matter ONLY when the RNC, speaking for God, says that they do or don't.
Just like DIVINE-RIGHT monarchs, The-Powers-that-Be USE the confusion generated by "It doesn't matter" & "ULTIMATE commitment to values is salvation" to do WHATEVER they want.

(5,763 posts)Just sayin'. There's enough wiggle-room in those words to let him weasel out of it. That's the way Limbaugh always escaped.
(Frankly, if Nuggent hadn't hit it big, he'd be in prison already, and not for anything to do with politics.)
Either way, why do I think the rule-of-law, tough-on-crime crowd cheered those very words? They knew what Nuggent was saying, even if he can't be nailed with it.
It's worthwhile for Obama to win just because you know the invective will suddenly go quiet. The Repub propaganda machine has pulled out all the stops against Obama for the last four years, only to assure he's not re-elected. But in the meantime, there have been no purges, no concentration camps, no storm troopers breaking down people's doors (except in the War on Drugs, which the Repubs want). The flames have to be fanned pretty hard to keep up this level of rage. It all becomes moot on November 7th. If Obama wins, I'm thinking things will go pretty quiet.

(5,061 posts)Nugent has no credibility on this: he's a blowhard. It's more likely that someone listening would try something than he would.
It's not a dog whistle. He practically invites anyone in earshot to take up arms against this president, to "kill the cayote". The thing is, though, is that Nugent himself is completely not credible as a potential threatener. Though he says he'll be dead or in prison, in reality we all know he will do nothing, just like he did when he had the chance to fight in a war he supported.
Pretty sure, though, that if someone on the left had said this to an audience of gun owners in the Bush era, they would already have been waterboarded.
The Secret Service has to say they will look at this, but look at what they actually said: they are investigating whether to investigate. They know it's Ted Nugent. They would probably do better to investigate the other people at the convention at random.
What ought to be more concerning is the Romney campaign's embrace of Nugent. Do they not know who he is, and the sort of bombs he likes to throw? This isn't someone who "palled around with" someone 20 years ago: this is someone who endorses, a campagin that welcomes it, and then this immediate acceleration into hyperbolic, violent rhetoric. Their flaccid denial isn't enough: they need to denounce and refudiate.
