Fascinating article about how the virulently racist Robert Moses, who effectively controlled all transportaion planning for many decades, turned the New York City metro area into the land of the car, fighting rail right of ways every place he could: Letter from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway by Zach Dorfman

Moses even deliberately made the overpasses on Long Island too low to accommodate buses, to keep the low-lifes from being able to get to the beaches easily.

a corridor of highway hacking that borough in half down the middle. The result could be seen very clearly in the 60s-70s as apartment buildings on both sides were abandoned, vandalized, and looked like they had been bombed. What had been a vibrant neighborhood had been utterly destroyed.

He did highway engineering with a racist hatchet.
