Sanders Calls for Voting Holiday to 'Fix' Failed Democracy
Independent senator introducing legislation to create 'Democracy Day' to increase turnout
by Lauren McCauley, staff writer
Responding to the "disgraceful" voter turnout for last week's midterm electionjust 36.6 percentSenator Bernie Sanders (Vt.) argued on Monday that the way to "fix" American democracy is for Election Day to be established as a national holiday.
"Can we be satisfied with a 'democracy' when more than 60% of people dont vote and some 80% of young people and low-income Americans dont either?" Sanders wrote in a Guardian op-ed published Monday.
The column follows Sanders' announcement late last week that he will introduce legislation in upcoming days calling for the creation of "Democracy Day" to provide all Americans with the time and opportunity to vote.
Crediting voter disengagement, as well as efforts by "Republican governors and state legislators" to "keep people away from the polls" for the low turnout, Sanders argues that now, more than ever, is when the voices (and votes) of those disenfranchised populations are most needed. He writes:
We must convince young people that if they vote in large numbers, we can lower the 20% real unemployment they are experiencing with a major jobs program. We must convince students that if they participate in the political process, we can lower the outrageously high student debt they face. We must convince low-income workers that voting can raise the national minimum wage to a real living wage. We must convince seniors that not only can we prevent cuts to Social Security we can expand the paltry benefits that so many are forced to live on. We must convince the millions of Americans who are deeply worried about climate change that political participation can transform our energy system away from fossil fuels to energy efficiency and sustainable energy and create millions of jobs.

*Ironically, I think my call was in a post where I lambasted people blaming voters for Tuesday, and the OP was about Sanders.

(45,251 posts)Not that I am opposed to a day off. However, if the holiday is for voting, you can't just spend the day catching up on laundry. You have to vote. Enforcing the voting bit requires proof of voting, which is going to require modifications at the polls.

(45,251 posts)We do get checked in and out of the polling place by name and address, though. So, I guess that is checkable, too.
Okay, done!

(205,405 posts)I asked how the turnout had been, since it was pretty busy when I showed up (7pm), and he said they were still at less than 50%, low for this area.

(611 posts)I've been hearing calls for election day to be a national public holiday since at least the 1970s. I suspect it's one of those ideas which traces back to the CPUSA or the Wobblies, but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes all the way back to the formation of the republic.
Half-Century Man
(5,279 posts)I still have to advocate for calling it "We the People Day". The name will encourage turnout as well.

(611 posts)It just seems like something the Wobblies might have advocated. Not that it's terribly important.
BTW: I like your name for the holiday.

(25,699 posts)1) Each workplace comes up with their own holiday schedules. There is no mandate to follow the federal holiday schedule unless your workplace is government-operated. When's the last time you got a President's Day or martin Luther King day off from work?
2) Being a federal holiday... a lot of bus lines would shut down for the day. Unfortunately a lot of voters require bus access to get to their polling places.

(45,251 posts)Then I went to work for myself and (usually) got my birthday off, too. But as long as everyone gets time off on a day when the polls are open, why is it important that it be the same day off for every workplace?
I am sure they can work around the public transportation stuff if we give them a reminder. They may be out of touch enough that they won't think of that on their own. Being a lifelong city type, my polling place is a very easy walk. So, I could be out of touch on that one myself, but not because my limo is always there whenever I need it!
When I took a position with a government office after nearly 25 years in the private sector, I was surprised to find both the federal holidays you mention on the holiday schedule.
That will no doubt change as charter schools and a deep-red state administration in Ohio continue to chip away at public schools.
I'm no civics expert, and Sanders's idea would be a good start I think, but it would seem to me this would require a constitutional amendment to have any real teeth.

Not that anyone should hold their breath waiting for that to happen, obviously.

(5,754 posts)There should be high pay off national and state lotteries that you get free tickets for at the polling place. Like most lotteries, they could use half the money for the budget, so by voting you'd be getting a few minutes of fantasy and you'd help the budget without raising taxes.

(8,200 posts)Republicans would not oppose it, but would offer a plan to cut hours even more to restrict voting. It is absolutely asinine that we continue to vote on Tuesday. My understanding is that it allowed people in rural areas to get to the polls over the weekend. As a nation that was founded on the principle representation we have lost our way.
