An interesting article on Henry Ford and the 5 dollar wage
[ 2 ] January 5, 2015 | Erik Loomis
On January 5, 1914, Henry Ford announced his famous $5 a day wage to his workers. Ford is often lauded for his efforts here and he was surely forward-thinking in creating this salary. But this post will also challenge his reputation as a good employer, for Ford expected plenty in return from those employees, far more than any employee should have to accept.

(1,016 posts)Employers treat their workers like they are indentured slaves. Ironically, the supervisors, which come from lower incomes, are the worst. They are always trying to impress their corporate owners on how they drive the workforce. Just like the overseer of the Southern plantation.

(41,146 posts)PBS has an excellent program on many aspects of Ford's life, career and family, including his anti-semitism. Labor union giant Walter Reuther (1907-1970) of the AFL-CIO, and UAW started out in Detroit and tangled with Ford especially strike breakers. In the early 1950s Reuther toured a Ford plant in Ohio. While observing new industrial robots H. Ford, or a mgmt. official asked Reuther, 'How are you going to get them to pay your union dues?' and Reuther replied, 'How are you going to get them to buy Fords?'
