"Russia Re-Examined," "Soviet Women," "Soviet But Not Russian" by William Mandel (PDFs)

https://archive.org/details/RussiaReExamined (from 1967)https://archive.org/details/SovietWomen (from 1975)
https://archive.org/details/SovietButNotRussian (from 1985)
All three scanned by me with permission from William Mandel's sons.
Mandel was an analyst of Soviet affairs who was relatively sympathetic to the subject in comparison with others. He didn't agree with everything the Soviets did, but he did confront what he saw as anti-communist prejudices and distortions about the country.
The first book is a general overview of Soviet society, covering all sorts of things from government and elections to health care, agriculture, job rights, education, etc.
The second book is, as the name suggests, about women in the USSR, how far they've come since 1917 and how they compare to women in other countries (the USA, China, etc.)
The third book is about the non-Russians of the USSR, from Ukrainians, Kazakhs and Latvians to blacks, Jews and the peoples of the far-north who were the Soviet equivalent to Eskimos.
For other, random books myself and others have scanned click here.

I don't think anyone argues that anything approaching extermination occurred after Stalin died.
One book you may find interesting, by a different author: https://archive.org/details/HumanRightsInTheSovietUnion

I'm looking through the first one, and it looks like a great read. Thanks.
