Retire Mississippi’s state flag

Posted: Sunday, August 30, 2015 4:00 am

The Mississippi flag is revered by many white Mississippians as a symbol of the state’s heritage. But black Mississippians view the flag’s Confederate battle flag canton as a reminder of racial oppression.

This is not a healthy divide for a state that seeks to thrive in 21st century America, when diversity and change are keys to social progress and a better life for people of all races and backgrounds.

The time is overdue for the Mississippi Legislature and the governor to remove the Confederate image from the state flag, and retire the present banner to the Old Capitol Museum in Jackson where other artifacts from the state’s past are displayed ...

“It’s time for Mississippi to fly a flag for all its people” ...
