Pull down that battle flag now, Ole Miss

The man picked as the next leader at the University of Mississippi is scheduled to arrive on the picturesque Oxford campus this week to meet with students, alumni, faculty and staff.

But there is one thing that chancellor-in-waiting Jeffrey Vitter shouldn't see — the Mississippi state flag ...

As an Ole Miss alumnus, I was never prouder of that fact than last week when the Associated Student Body Senate voted convincingly, 33-15-1, to recommend that the flag no longer fly over the historic campus ....

So what that Mississippians who bothered to show up voted 14 years ago to keep the current flag, which includes the Confederate battle emblem in its design. Community standards have changed a lot since then. More racial tolerance and less racial bigotry are evident now — even in Mississippi. And the racially divisive flag must go ...
