Marine Combat Vet Kicked Out of Senate Meeting For Speaking Too Much Truth

Marine Combat Vet Kicked Out of Senate Meeting For Speaking Too Much Truth
By Andrew Emett

Lansing, MI — After returning from Iraq, Dakota Serna found himself battling PTSD and taking prescription pills for roughly three years after leaving the service. Due to a botched hernia operation, doctors began prescribing painkillers along with his antidepressants, leading to ulcers in his stomach and intestines.

With the prescription pills taking their toll on his body and mind, Serna abandoned the FDA-approved medications after a friend shared a joint with him. No longer suffering from incessant nightmares and insomnia, Serna found that his anxiety had decreased, and his patience had returned. Instead of making him more hostile, cannabis offered Serna a peace of mind that the nauseating combination of pills never gave him.

During a Senate Committee meeting last week in Lansing, Michigan, Serna spoke before the members to discuss HB 4209 and how it affects medical marijuana patients. According to Michigan state law, patients suffering from a number of illnesses, including Alzheimer's disease, cancer, HIV, seizures, and PTSD, qualify for medical marijuana. Before his microphone was suddenly cut off, Serna had been attempting to explain how HB 4209 places a greater tax burden on people who barely survive on fixed incomes.

"I am a veteran," Serna addressed the panel. "A Marine. Served my country. Fought in Iraq. And I've received, and battle with PTSD to this very day. Now, I didn't just get my post-traumatic stress from rolling down the street and seeing car bombs or having mortars falling out of the sky and hurt a few people. No. I kicked in doors, and I killed people from distances less than we are from each other."

1. Our Legislators

We have people in elected office who are stuck in the past, and I don't mean 1999. They don't look at information in an attempt to understand its good and/or bad aspects, they are reactionaries who have no compassion and no capacity to change to a more progressive outlook. What if returning vets have problems, the system has used them up and all that is left are the problems. The senator's job seems to be to thwart the will of the people and make a helpful treatment more difficult to reach. It will take a personal experience for them to change even the slightest. Remember the draconian sentences that were handed down in Texas a couple of decades ago? That is until a couple of the state legislators' kids got busted. I have acquaintances who have rheumatoid arthritis, fibromelitis who have Marajuana cards and they say that they get relief not available with more sophisticated drugs with fewer side effects. What's another bag of Doritos?

My state has begun the dispensary/card thing, and has decriminalized weed. They could do more but we have a GOP governor right now so I think we'll have to wait a while.

I favor full legalization across all fifty states, but that, like other things, is going to take time.

what a fucking asshole that senator is. Wouldn't even let him finish talking. Coward.

The Great Lakes State is infested with Republicans in the legislature. The out state areas are pushing to have more influence than the high-population areas like the greater Detroit area. So gerrymandering. The people vote for medical marijuana...just look at these fucks trying to go against the will of the people. I don't know what it's going to take to wake people up out there.
