'Meth' Is Virtually Identical to Adderall —This Is How I Found Out

Public education campaigns designed to frighten people away from the illicit stimulant distort what the drug really does.

This article was originally published by The Influence, a news site that covers the full spectrum of human relationships with drugs. Follow The Influence on Facebook or Twitter.

The long subway ride from DC’s airport to Silver Spring was unusually pleasant. It had been about an hour since I had taken a low dose of methamphetamine. It was my 40th birthday—Oct. 30, 2006—and I was headed to a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-sponsored meeting.

A friend who had a prescription for the drug had given me a couple of pills as a gift, knowing that I was an expert on amphetamines but had never actually taken any myself. I sat on the train feeling alert, mentally stimulated and euphorically serene.

When the effects had worn off after a few hours, I thought, That was nice. I worked out, and enjoyed a productive two-day meeting. I didn’t crave the drug or feel the need to take any more. I certainly didn’t engage in any unusual behaviors—hardly the stereotypical picture of a “meth head.”

So why is it that the general public has such a radically different view of this drug?

for life. And most of the abusers use a lot of it and try to manufacture it while on meth thus leading to many explosions.

For a lot of people, alcohol can be great, for the duration of the buzz. If you don't overdo it, not too much issue the next day, either.

But if you're an alcoholic, it's a far different story.

I suspect the public view of meth is what it can do to an addict. Not what it does for someone who can manage proper dosing without overdoing it.

I think any individual can potentially react differently to different drugs. For myself, it's a damn good thing that opiates are hard to get and I haven't crossed the line to get them illegally. But booze, no particular issue for me. For someone I used to know, booze was a death sentence.

I guess the public sensibility leans towards caution. And that's probably a good thing.

Methamphetamine is amphetamine with an extra "methyl group" - CH3 - bonded to it in a process known as methylation. (All amphetamines carry at least one methyl group; meth has two.) The first thing your body will do to a methamphetamine molecule is demethylate it. Hence, about three seconds after you drop meth your body converts it into plain old amphetamine - exactly what Adderall is.

As to why the general public has such a radically different view of the drug...

Gee guys...ya think maybe meth made by soaking cold tablets in gasoline, battery acid and fertilizer in some guy's garage then consumed by someone who eats every three days whether he needs to or not might fuck your shit up a little worse than amphetamine that's been properly methylated over laboratory-grade catalysts and consumed by a well-fed, well-rested man?
