Why Are Americans Ignoring Trevor Noah, new host of The Daily Show?
This crazy campaign should be his coming-out party. Instead, its our first election since 2000 where
The Daily Show might as well not exist.
In mid-January, with Bernie Sanders surging in the polls in Iowa, The Daily Show With Trevor Noah decided it was time to formally introduce Sanders to its audience. Sanders officially declared his candidacy this past May and has been squarely in the public eye for months now, his positions, politics, unkempt hair, and Brooklyn accent dissected all over cable news and razzed by every late-night show in the land (including The Daily Show). Still, Noah supposed its viewers might be wondering [about] this rising new, yet old, force in the Democratic Party.
Then Noah launched into The Legend of Bernie Sanders, a relatively straightforward, jokey synopsis of Sanders accomplishments, from his birth in Brooklyn to his election as senator, climaxing in his album of folk songs. If you ask me personally, Noah said, Bernie Sanders popularity has nothing to do with policy. I think its because hes opposite Trump. See, the world craves balance. Hes the yin to Trumps racist yang. Noah concluded by pointing out that both Trump and Sanders regularly commit New Yorkstyle assaults on the pronunciation of the word huge. The segment was a précis of Noahs Daily Show so far: something that looks like The Daily Show, that mugs and winks like The Daily Show, but that has only a diluted point of view.

(7,865 posts)Larry Wilmore seems to have hit his stride a lot better. Of course he had a more open format to work with that helped him along. He also seems more comfortable getting deep into it.

(9,323 posts)The Daily Show with John Stewart had something to say, it took a position. With Trevor Noah, it says nothing. It's talking about the same things, but it's coming from the same angle as Jay Leno. It prefers to make fun of their pants or hair instead of their hypocrisy. It might as well be Capitol Hill Fashion Police.

It's like trying to tell jokes about flying when you've never flown anywhere or a Catholic priest trying to tell jokes about modern dating. It's fine. I wouldn't tell great jokes about South African politics.

(6,960 posts)I think some people simply tuned out after Stewart left, but it takes time to adjust to the new host. I not only think Trevor is good, but also that he's caught on pretty quickly to American politics.
If you watch him back-to-back on demand*, you'll appreciate his growth and understanding.

(1,325 posts)Tough position for Trevor, but methinks he's doing a splendid job; and Larry too!!! I still find Trevor's commentaries on our Primaries and events around the world to be deeper and more insightful than any pablum our media cretins serve up. And the moment of Zen is great! Glad he kept it going.

(1,642 posts)And I never found Noah to be funny.
The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore is fabulous.
It looks like the new show with Samantha Bea is terrific, as well.
Just to show what a force (um, farce, maybe) is the Trumpster, everyone I know now says "yuuuge." Yuuuge is the new "humongous."

(869 posts)people aren't watching as much tv..they get stuff off the internet, tablet, phone, more choices...I am sure he's still doing well by these different standards....jon was the era when more people watched tv.

(1,615 posts)he's clearly competent, but it was a mistake not to choose another american.
wilmore was consistently funny as a correspondent but the pace of "nightly" moves too slow.
remember circa 2013 thinking to myself re: stewart and colbert "this can't last" and sure enough it didn't. i miss those two, they brought respite and even perspective to a really dark period of american history.
anyhow, the reason no one pays attention to the daily show anymore is because it's... bad. i saw that sanders segment, and was angry afterwards. it was just bad. DUers give him too much credit; he's a talented comedian, but does the job poorly.

(13,616 posts)and at the risk of sounding racist, because he is a black american, he can skewer race in ways the Noah cannot, because Noah has not lived the Black American experience. Granted, Noah could take a tip from Oliver and use his foreigner status in a more edgy way (like his comment about "for 100 dollars a day" his best high point yet.) In some ways Wilmore is BETTER than Stewart, because while he can be angry, he never has to use the "ar-e-you-fuckin-kidin-me!" Noo Yawk angry shock jock act Stewart did.
However, i will not panic, because while the Daily show is in flux, we now have Wilmore, Oliver, and soon Bee. More attacks, spread out. Of course, I have my idea for who could replace Noah. Get a male and female lead. For those who used to watch attack of the show, get Chris Hardwick and Olivia Munn, who could easily do the 2016 version of Dan Akryod and Jane Curtin.
