Historian Says Bugs Bunny Might be Jewish
http://www.algemeiner.com/2013/12/24/historian-says-bugs-bunny-might-be-jewish/#A noted Jewish-British cinematic historian has claimed that the worlds most famous rabbit displays prominent Jewish characteristics. According to film scholar David Yehuda Stern, Bugs Bunny was created by a Jewish producer, lived in a Jewish neighborhood, has a distinctly New York/Jewish accent and uses his wit and sense of humor to avoid all attempts to eliminate him.
Stern revealed his findings at a lecture held recently at Britains University of Warwick, Israeli daily Maariv reported. Stern, who watched thousands of animated shorts that feature Bugs Bunny, noted in his presentation that there are Jewish fingerprints all over the smart aleck cartoon character, including the very voice of Bugs Bunny Jewish actor Mel Blanc.
Sterns exhaustive study even included the findings of one specific cartoon episode in which Bugs Bunny flashes back to his childhood. The New York neighborhood Bugs grew up in is teeming with obviously Jewish characters, such as ultra-Orthodox Jews and other stereotypically Eastern European figures from the turn of the 20th century.
Stern closed his case for Bugs Bunny being Jewish by reminding his audience that the legendary rabbits arch nemesis is Porky Pig. The pig, of course, is Judaisms quintessentially unclean animal.
Lastly, Stern joked that the word rabbit becomes rabbi if you just get rid of the final letter
Bugs! buballeh! Welcome home!

** Note though the researcher is a bit off regarding Porky, who I believe is a friend of Bugs.

Jew Score:

Ehhhh... What's up, docs? Looks like there is some stuff out there about Bugs Bunny possibly being Jewish. Let's see if we can figure this one out.
Rabbits are not kosher
Bugs passes our Berenstein Bears Law, so it's possible that he could be Jewish.
Bugs speaks with a New York accent
Not all New Yorkers are Jews. Sorry, rest of the country.
Bugs was partly based on Groucho Marx, Jew
A point for the Jew camp.
Bugs was voiced by Mel Blanc, Jew
Normally, that will give the Jew theory more traction, but Blanc voiced pretty much every Looney Tunes character... including Porky Pig. And we're not having Porky Pig, thank you very much.
Bugs' original name was Happy Rabbit
Let's face it, the odds for a Jew to be (named) Happy are quite low.
Bugs' two main enemies, Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam, are obvious goyim
Can't argue there, but why would that make Bugs Jewish?
So, as you see, there's just not enough evidence to proclaim him a Jew. Of course, that hasn't stopped us before. Except for one very important thing:
We proclaimed Daffy Duck as Jewish
And having both Daffy and Bugs as Jews just seems prepothterous... Sorry, docs.
Verdict: Not a Jew.

Ummm...two Jews, three opinions! Or just opposing views...

Honestly, though, I wouldn't be surprised. Look at "Superman"....Jew! In reality, it was a way for Jews to express themselves in ways that wouldn't be shot down because the Jewishness wasn't too obvious. It was how many Jews demonstrated the struggles of the Jewish community in non-obvious ways and made for damn good stories/jokes.

(53,961 posts)His creators were both Jews and it was really about being an "alien" in a culture which is awed by him and at the same time fears him. He is assimilated as a baby, his religion is forgotten (hidden) in place of the predominant one, he hides his true identity, he appreciates and supports his culture, but doesn't push it on others, and other parallels. The "real" story is that the creators weren't really making him a Jew, but more about expressing their concerns, hopes, and fears about being Jewish in America.

(39,313 posts)And I always wondered about this storyline. Why does he have to be a smart but shy guy with glasses, why not make him just an everyday businessman. Hmm.

(53,961 posts)ETA: I think there might have been a reason to make Clark Kent sort of nebbish. It is often how Jews were seen...weak, unathletic, clumsy, and bookish.

(2,025 posts)So he can't be described as having an arch nemesis. If he did it would be Elmer Fudd, or Yosemite Sam, or one of the other Loony Tunes characters he had a spat with, but not Porky Pig. He didn't have much to do with Porky Pig, Daffy Duck was the one who shared the screen with him.
You could almost say Bugs shunned Porky which would probably still make him Jewish.

(31 posts)Who cares if the cartoons have Jewish characters playing them, just enjoy it, it is like these historians who when they are run out of history information go on blabbering about the society.
Go and do some history over your Brit community, called land of manners, actually Land of..i....

(12,157 posts)Stern should've left that out as it shows he has not really studied the rabbit as carefully as he says. Perhaps his personal dislike of pork and pigs colored his judgement. People see what they want to see if not careful.

(18,634 posts)They argued as to who created Bugs.
The Jewish producer, Leon Schlesinger, had nothing to do with it. He didn't like or understand cartoons.
But as the article says, Mel blank was and had a huge influence
