Lawmakers In Other States Claim They Have No Idea They Are Mandating Vaginal Probes

Transvaginal ultrasounds. Non-consensual vaginal probing. State-sanctioned rape. These phrases became the weapons in the latest battle of the war on women, as the Virginia Republicans’ attempt to add more onerous pre-abortion restrictions turned into a fight over the personal bodily rights of those who seek to terminate pregnancies.

According to the Washington Post, the issue turned the moment that “transvaginal ultrasound” hit the legislative floor. Bill sponsors, admitting that they had no idea that most early abortions would require a vaginal ultrasound in order to determine a fetus’s gestational age, suddenly found themselves not simply forcing women to look at pictures of their potential babies and then sit for another 24 hours to hope they change their minds. Instead, they were mandating the government literally force themselves into women’s lives, and bodies, a message that didn’t play nearly as well.

So will this public outcry effect the legislation in other states? Pennsylvania is also considering passing a mandatory ultrasound bill, and of course, legislators are now on record saying they had no idea they were forcing women to undergo transvaginal ultrasounds.

Until recently, I thought that an ultrasound involved moving a mouse-like object around on a woman's abdomen. You know, just like the ones you see on TV. I didn't know that that was just one way of performing an ultrasound.

I live in Virginia, and I was opposed to the legislation anyway, on the grounds that the government has no business mandating medical procedures, especially if the bill is handed to the unwilling recipient of the procedure. It was at DU that I read what the actual procedure involved.

Most folks seem to support DNA collection of those 'Accused' of crimes, and DNA collection requires the dissolution of a cell wall. It may not be a vagina, but it could easily be a cell from a mucus membrane. "Open your mouth so we may swab it".

The legislators are probably claiming ignorance because it proved unpopular, not because they didn't know.

ANY legislator who votes yes on ANY bill without knowing ALL the contents is both incompetent and corrupt, and as far as I am concerned, is morally and intellectually incapable of representing me. Ever. If there's ANY part of their job it's INEXCUSABLE to fail at, it's passing laws where YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THE FUCK WHAT YOU DID!!!

Just because it's as common as rape in South Africa doesn't mean it's acceptable.
