Historically, there was a time when the VP would have been the one who came in second in the election -- regardless of party.
What having the "winning" candidate picking the vp means is that in the case of succession, the president could be someone who never received a single vote of the people.
What does an endorsement mean in terms of job qualification?

Seems to me he would be a great choice. He's definitely an up and coming Democratic leader in the Senate.
