Mitch Dobrowner has a vivid imagination. When he listens to music, he can see colors. And before he goes out to photograph, his minds eye already sees an image of what he wants.
This time, it was something like a spaceshipthe type of storm cloud that takes on a distinctive saucerlike shape.

His expectations were metand then somethe first time he found himself facing a supercell storm on Americas northern plains. He and Roger Hill, a veteran storm chaser whos been his guide ever since, had been following this particular storm for nine hours as it wound its way from Sturgess, South Dakota, through the Badlands, and down into Valentine, Nebraska, gathering force as it went.
I couldnt believe what I was looking at, he says. It was so surreal to me.

(38,427 posts)Bad storm, but I was tough..you know, like any 26 year old thinks.
And..all the large trucks were getting off the interstate, it was in the middle of Nebraska ,I think..73, at about 8:30 pm....So, I keep driving on through the storm, and a bolt of lightening hits the hood of the car and jumps across it. Immediately, it was grounded and I was ok..but what an experience..Radio shut off for a quarter of a second and the car kept driving. Now, at the next turn off, I get off the interstate, find a restaurant, and get a big piece of my favorite pie...with a large soda....emmmmm
Also, great pictures..thanks for sharing..
