North Korea Agrees to Curb Nuclear Work; U.S. Offers Aid.
North Korea agreed to suspend nuclear weapons tests and uranium enrichment and allow international inspectors to monitor activities at its main nuclear complex, the Norths official news agency and the State Department announced on Wednesday. The promises could end years of a standoff that has allowed the Norths nuclear program to continue with no international oversight and are part of a deal that included an American pledge to ship food aid to the isolated, impoverished nation. . .
North Korea also agreed on a moratorium on launchings of long-range missiles, which have in the past raised military tensions with South Korea and Japan. . .
Two days of talks in Beijing last week between the United States and North Korea initially appeared to have produced few concrete results. But after the North Korean negotiators returned home, the countrys leaders responded positively to American offers to resume international negotiations and deliver the food aid provided the country agreed to the steps announced on Wednesday.

(70,601 posts)The N. Koreans would spend a few days telling Richardson about what a
devil the Americans were but after a while he would ask them how much
rice, beans, corn, and what have you they needed. He would tell the administration
and they would tell the Dept. of Ag and they saw what surplus commodities*
could be had and the N. Koreans wouldn't build any nukes. But under W he
quit all talks w/ the N. Koreanseven after they asked to talk w/ him and then they
went and built a nuke which then cost us much more in time and money and
f***ing around after they got one.
BTW we never heard anything about our talks w/ N. Korea because grown ups do
diplomacy w/out publicity.
* Which helped American Farmers and kept some N. Koreans from starving too.

ASAP where ever we wanted to and w/ no preconditions. W/ said no
and then things went to shit after that.
Can you imagine how much stuff President Obama would have gotten done
by now if the republicans had worked w/ him just a little bit?
