White People Need to Be Better
GQ columnist Damon Young has some advice on how to do just that. It's as good a "Quick Start Guide" as I've ever seen, and hits home firmly but kindly on every single point. I especially liked these bits:
But if America is actually serious about living up to its ideals and resisting Fuckface McPussyGrabber, white people need to be better. Its white people who have to learn how to be better citizens, friends, and allies. White people who need to be better patriots, neighbors, and Christians (if applicable). And its white people who have to get yalls backwards cousins forward-facing somehow, because we just arent equipped with the tools necessary (say, conveniently acceptable whiteness) to do it ourselves.
...
Now, the dismantling of white supremacy doesnt mean that black (or Mexican or Puerto Rican) supremacy will take its place. The bad part of white supremacy isnt the white part; its the other thing. As long as your whiteness and your cultural identity isnt infused with (and dependent on) a notion of superiority, keep it! Be as white as you can be! Its the supremacy, the part where one group of people rules over all other groups of peoplethats the bad part. You can keep NASCAR and Lululemon.
Short and to the point, I hope it gets widely read.

(274 posts)all Muslims into a singular group, and label them all as terrorists until proven otherwise...think travel ban. It is also wrong to lump all White People into a group, which sadly is done every single day.

(901 posts)Thanks for lumping all white people together, too.
Plus, recently, I had an individual jump down my throat and accuse me of not understanding anything because of having "white privilege," which really stung. I'd merely commented at how much worse all of the racial attacks had become since tRump "won" the election. He said it's just as bad as ever and that I'm an idiot, a person who enjoyed "white privilege" and therefore doesn't know what I'm talking about and am insensitive.
Meanwhile, I tried reaching out to my family members who are rabid tRump supporters and ended up with no relationship with some or a superficial one with others, so it didn't go well and, though I'd love to change their minds, they're behaving like religious zealots. Ever tried to reason with someone like that maybe about evolution? It doesn't work. So, if giving my time, energy, money, losing sleep and losing my family isn't enough, then maybe I should just give up?
In any case, I just read another article on Alternet that so upset me that I burst into tears and literally started having chest pain, so maybe I'll sign off for a while. I don't think I'm coping with all of this and need a break. Not trying to be on the pitty pot, but good grief, I've sure had enough. I'm going to try to avoid all news for at least a few days and think of other things.
