US media see resurgence after years of downward spiral as Trump attacks 'dishonest' press

AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

As President Donald Trump steps up his attacks on the “dishonest” press, major American media outlets are seeing an apparent resurgence after years of downward spiral.

Newspapers, radio and television had begun to see growth during the 2016 election campaign, and that has accelerated since the inauguration, despite — or perhaps because of — the vitriol from the new president and his aides.

While much of the industry has been slumping in recent years, the war between the president and the news media has seemingly drawn in a flood of new readers, listeners and viewers, including many willing to pay for news.

CNN viewership rose a stunning 94 percent during the week of Trump’s inauguration in January, even as the president assailed the cable news operator as a purveyor of “fake news.”

as a result of this election. I am continuing mine, and also subscribed to The Nation and am continuing my subscription to The Atlantic.

I will not re-subscribe to cable TV. Plenty of good news on PBS. And the fun stuff (Daily Show) I can get in my YouTube subscription.

and our subscription to the NY Times will continue despite its sandbagging of Hillary Clinton. (The NYT is big one in the long list of "if they hadn't done x" people/entities responsible for electing Trump.) And The Atlantic is probably my favorite journal if I had to name one.

But Trump and the Republicans' Koch caucus all plan to "privatize" PBS, currently the ONLY decent source of news on broadcast TV. It's supposedly only about cutting taxes, but of course PBS viewers are actually somewhat informed and thus a problem.
