When Matt Vajgrt drove past a man standing on a Grand Island street holding a sign asking for food, he knew exactly what he needed to do — pull over and give the man some leftover pizza.

Vajgrt and friends from his church had just gathered at Bonzai Beach Club in downtown Grand Island. He couldn’t finish his pizza selection, one of many at the restaurant that bear surfboarding names.

“I had about half a pizza left,” Vajgrt said. “His sign said ‘money for food,’ so I stopped and just gave him my food.”

“He was happy — saying, ‘God bless you. Thank you,’” Vajgrt said. “It felt good to help someone.”

It was a spur-of-the-moment good deed, but response to a heartfelt concern the Grand Island Senior High School junior has had for some time.
